There could be heavy criticism for building a bridge the residents of the ward don't want. Tne Federal Government has never been particularly warm to the Smyth Road plan and would probably be "It's the first time I ever heard of two aldermen fighting against a bridge in their own ward, especially when that bridge would ease a bad traffic problem." Fear new problems Aid. Heit and Kay say the bridge would create a problem worse than the one it solves. They fear it would funnel heavy commercial traffic through the centre of the Elmvale Acres subdivision and turn several residen- Gloucester Ward Aldermen Murray Heit and Don Kay will continue their fight to block construction of the Smyth Road Bridge. They will try to find evidence to bolster their stand that the bridge is un-neces-sary and is a flagrant waste of city, provincial and federal money.

Some members of city council are amazed at the Heit-Kay stand. Says Con. Ernie Jones: Office workers gain benefits The Office Employees International Union, Local 225, has announced renewal of two contracts with improved terms for the members. The contracts are with the Borden Company Limited, Ottawa Dairy Division and the' Canadian Brotherhood of Railway, Transport and General Workers. The Borden contract was renewed for one year and provides for wage increase of about $16 monthly as well as a reduction in the work week from '36V4 to 35 hours.

The contract with the other union is for two years and provides for a wage increase of $20 monthly $10 each year, and renews the 32V4 hour week clause. Mr. Haig said that the fall coloring of the Gatineaur Park area could be made a great attraction. Aid. Ken Fogarty suggested a tourist week be declared before the main season begins next year. Purpose of the week would be to acquaint Ottawans of the importance of the tourist industry and of the part they can play in its development.

Mr. and Mrs. R. I. Miller of Hither Hills told the committee of a camping and tenting site they had set up this year on Highway 31 six miles out of Ottawa.

They operated 40 campsites this year, plan 250 by next year and eventually space for 1,000 campers on a 100-acre site. Aid. St. Germain said a second camping ground was being developed on the Pres-cott Highway. A large camping and tourist area was under construction at Glen Eagle.

tial streets into superhighways. They fear, particularly, that Smyth Road itself would become a heavy truck artery; perhaps even the main truck entrance to the city from the south end. "The present setup with trucks using Bank Street and the Queensway, is much better," says Aid. Heit. "What we need to do is improve Billings' and Hurdmans Bridges." The two aldermen intend to have a petition circulated through Gloucester Ward to find out if residents share their lack of enthusiasm for the new bridge.

"I think most residents of both Elmvale and Urbandale will agree with us," says Aid. Kay. "A quiet subdivision is more desirable than a fast entrance to the city, if that fast entrance it a truck superhighway." May embarrass crancil If the two aldermen, supported by a large petition, return to city council to fight the bridge, council will find itself in an embarrassing position. The Smyth Road Bridge will cost $1,147,000, with vate homes. High School education helpful but not necessary.

The Ottawa Tourist and Convention Committee is already preparing for a banner tourist season in 1964. Director Gerry Geldert told the committee Tuesday night that $24,000 would be spent for tourist literature this year, an increase of $3,000 over last year. Harvey Glatt of the Treble Clef plans for a folk music festival in late June or early July. This would include three performances at Lans-downe Park, which he estimated would draw 10,000 persons per performance.

Professional and amateur talent would be featured, and he estimated 15,000 to 20,000 persons would attend from outside Ottawa. Bob Haig of the Greater Ottawa Motel Association urged that the tourist reception centres open earlier and remain open longer. He suggested opening on the Tulip Festival Weekend. Aid. John Powers suggested that publicity be given to the National Capital Commission's petunia plantations which now combine with the autumn coloring of trees in Rockcliffe Park, along the Driveways and at the Experimental Farm to provide scenes of great beauty.

Tours planned Aid. Charles St. Germain said plans were under way to organze regional tours of the area.
