Mr. Faragoh died on Monday at his home, 2711 Shasta Road, in Berkeley, after a long illness. He was 71. He had resided there since his retirement 15 years ago. It was Mr.

Faragoh, who came to the United States from Hungary with his parents when he was 10, who actually coined the gansterese phrases used by Chicago and New York gangs in the 1930s. He invented the jargon for the movie "Little Caesar," on which he was the chief screen writer and the gangsters liked it so much they picked it up and added it to their generally limited VOcabularies. Mr. Faragoh, who wrote musicals for the New York stage before transferring his activities from Broadway to Hollywood, wrote the script for "Vanity Fair," the first movie to be produced in or. He was one of the founders of the Screen Writers' Guild.

It delighted him to tease his fellow Hungarians, of whom he once said: "A Hungarian is the man who goes into the revolving door behind you and comes out ahead of you." With a worldwide reputation, he retired to live quietly in Berkeley. Few were aware of his fame. He is survived by his widow, Elizabeth, of Berkeley; a daughter, Susie, of Berkeley; a son, Frank, a professor of English Literature at McGill University in Canada; and a brother, Andrew. a retired businessman, of New York. Ex-Traffic Chief Pootel Dies at 79 Funeral services will be held tomorrow for The City's retired director of traffc, Capt.

Edward R. Pootel. Captain Pootel died Monday at his home, 784 21st Ave. He was 79. Captain Pootel, who started out as a rookie cop in the Mission District in 1913, was a center of controversy at City Hall in 1950 when it was alleged that he had altered his birth date to avoid compulsory retirement.

Claiming a mistake, he stepped down from his position as traffic director, only to involve the City Hall in another dispute over $1,400 in overtime pay, which he eventually won. At his retirement in 1950. the City's top brass, including police commissioners and business and professional men, gave him a rousing sendoff in the Fairmont Hotel's Gold Room.
