By Prescott Sullivan We'd like to know what goes on in the police station at the north end of Memorial Stadium, Berkeley.

Every football Saturday scores of people are called from the Berkeley stands, by the stadium announcer, and told to report at the station. Last Saturday, during the playing of the California-U. C. L. A.

debacle, the traffic was unusually heavy. Every two or three minutes, so it seemed, the stadium announcer would advise someone to report to the police station, at once. He started with the guys. "Mr. Joe Twerp, please report to the police station at the north end of the stadium.

Mr. Joe. Twerp. Urgent." A Mr. Sylvester Turkletop was similiarly hailed.

Then a Mr. Joe Skoff, a Mr. Fitzroy Greenberg, a Mr. Rodney Schmaltz, and so on through the first half. Next he started paging the girls.

"Will Miss Amy Klotz please report to the police station at the north end of the stadium." Myrtle Murphy, Brenda Burp, Gwendolyn Goldfarb and others were summoned. At this point a press box neighbor nudged us. "What do you make of that?" he Inquired. We had no ready answer. And we still haven't.

But this isn't, baseball; eight tenths of the conference teams have played only two of their five or six scheduled contests and, despite the fact that sen sational C. L. A. is on top, the race Is as wide open as the face of a tunnel and twice as dark beyond. The Uclans beat the team they like to' whip nibst next to their crosstown neighbor, U.

S. when they licked California, 21 to 0. The Bruins won on pass ing and down the middle power. California had four good chances and failed to connect. The Bear can't be counted out yet despite that quite large licking.

They've been like that guy in a poker game, holding kings and queens and losing to aces and deuces. Close enough to be tough but not quite good enough. BRUINS. VS. BRONCS.

U. C. L. A will be fighting this week for the honor of the confer ence. Santa Clara, the team of the coast at the moment because it is undefeated and untied, bat tles the Bruins in Lob Angeles after whipping Stanford, Cali fornia and Oregon State in sue cession.

This may be the game of the week since it pits the coast's two best passers, waterfield and Frel- tas, against each other, but it will not reflect upon the Rose Bowl although it may disgrace the conference. The game of last week was provided by the downbeat Tro jans who gathered their sprint ing speed to beat Washington State in a hot weather game In Los Angeles. The 26 to 12 score may not indicate new Trojan greatness although Jeff Cravath's boys are improving. It probably illustrates again that you can take those north em inland teams out of their heights and expect them to do their best in the heat of sea level TROJANS VS. INDIANS.

Southern California comes here to battle another newly awakened team, Stanford, in Kezar Stadium The Indians, with Fawcett, Hoisch and the newly discovered Dick Munroe, may have enough speed to hem in Howard Callanan and Mickey McArdle, the Trojan breakaway threats. Certainly the two Indian lines will outplay the Trojan forwards. Stanford, playing atrictly a running game to snow under an Idaho team that doesn't belong in the league, 64 to 7, showed definite improvement in offensive blocking. And the backs got up to the holes and through them faster. Washington State, the only conference team half way through its faces ita severest test at Portland with twice hum bled Oregon State.

If the Cougars get this one fh, they'll be breezing toward the Pasadena Bowl with Washington the only remaining threat. I The conference may, bt settled SATURDAY RESULTS Conference r. C. 91. California 0, Stanford A4, Idaho 7.

this Saturday snouian surprise anyone. "Stub" Allison thinks that Jim Jurkovich may be able to cavort at left half with a newly acquired knee brace. Meanwhile he's bring ing up from the Ramblers a lad named Welch who was a frosh star two years ago but didn't play last season. Welch is a good passer and fair runner at left half. There'll be no ohanges In the Bear line, says Stub, who sees steady Improvement.

Scrim mages will be held tomorrow, and Wednesday before the team en trains for Seattle. BEARS DISCOURAGED. "The kids are kind of discour aged." says Allison. "My Job now is to lift them up. I haven't lost faith." Marchie Schwartz found his left halfback problem also unsolved after the runaway from Idaho and he's decided to give Ross Dana, 6 foot, 171 pound soph who has been playing at right half, a chance to cavort in a backfield with "Buck" Fawcett.

Bill Sheller ana Kay Hammett. Harvey Bern-hard, who played a great tackle Saturday, will be moved to left guard behind "Chuck" Taylor be cause of hla offensive blocking." There seemp to be some question as to the legitimacy of U. C. L. third touchdown with which the Bruins completed their 21 to 0 conquest'of California last Saturday.

Loyola Routs Coast Guard HOLLYWOOD, Oct. Loyola University's footballers continued their undefeated way today, mopping up on the Alameda Coast Guard team, 38 to 8, before a crowd of 10,000 at Gil- more Stadium. The Coast Guard won the dis tinction, however, of being the first team to cross Loyola's goal line this season. With twenty seconds to go In the final quarter, Taft climaxed a sixty yard pass drive with a pass Into the end zone to Leong for a touchdown. Loyola pushed over two touchdowns in the opening period and eased up the rest of the way, with one each in the next two periods and two in the final quarter.

Loyola's aerial attack kept the Sea Lions spread out. The Coast Guard made its first serious bid midway in the third quarter, with a thirty-seven yard drive to the Loyola 13, where it lost the ball on a fumble. Full back Vince Pacewic a few minutes later began a personal drive for Loyola, packing the ball ninety-four yards In three plays for a touchdown. His final dash was sixty-five yards. Waterfield's thirty-seven yard pass on his fingertips, and falling face first into the end zone for the score.
