It was a hot, sunny day last June 23, when a sprightly little 15-year-old Dallas girl, laden down with hurriedly packed bags, ran for a New York-bound plane at Carter Field airport outside Dallas and not only caught the plane but caught the brass ring to stardom. For within a few short weeks, Bennye Gatteys who had never even been out of Texas or on a plane before was to be playing the lead in a hit Broadway play. And within four months she was to win fortune and fame and starring roles on some of television's top network shows. At the very last possible minute, Bennye's parents had agreed to let her accept an invitation to spend a 10-day vacation with her friend Janie Davis, in Janie's New York home. In Manhattan, Bennye, like any young tourist visiting the city for the first time, went sight-seeing.

But in the evenings at the apartment with Janie and Dr. and Mrs. Davis, family musical entertainment was a common pastime and Bennye, a talented singer and pianist, joined in. Bennye (her father had expected a boy and planned to call him Benjamin) had been singing and entertaining in Dallas since the age of five. She had studied piano, speech and drama, had appeared with the famed Margo Jones Theater '55 and in State Fair Musical productions, been on local TV and had won honors as a concert pianist Mrs.

Davis decided to make Bennye's 10-day visit really memorable. 1 She called up the people at Name That the CBS-TV quiz program which asks questions about music, and got Bennye an interview; after which the cute, 92-pound Texan was told she could go on the program in two weeks. Bennye had to telephone her mother and father to explain what had happened and get their permission to extend her stay "just for another two or three weeks." Teamed up with U. S. Navy Commander J.

L. Abbott, she then started a series of appearances on Name That Tune! that lasted eight weeks and ended with them winning $19,000. Exciting, almost incredible, things were happening off-screen, too. Broadway producer Kermit Bloomgarden was so impressed by Bennye's personality on the air that he signed her as an understudy for the Susan Strasberg role in his hit play, The Diary of Anne Frank though he had already auditioned some 600 professional actresses for the part. "This 15-year-old child had never appeared on Broadway before," he says today, "but she went on and played the title part for a full week and she did an amazing job.

The cast, as well as the audience, cheered her!" Bennye's parents came to New York to see her in the play. Motion picture companies and TV shows asked her to test and audition. In September, Bennye transferred to the Professional Children's School in New York City and, with her parents' consent, has continued living with her friends, "the wonderful Davises." Last Wednesday, after starring in an hour-long TV drama on Kraft Theater a month earlier, she sang the role of Becky Thatcher in U. S. Steel's TV musical version of Tom Sawyer.
