I nrvrr thought he would provide a follow with music to write columns by, but it has come to pass. From Radio KKKN, the San Jose house that George built for Cottonseed Clark, Cartus Jack and other celebrated country music merchants, strange new sounds are wafting this way-strange for KEEN, that is. Oh, there is no need for an Indian uprising or a range war among KEEX's hillbilly music devotees. Jimmy Wakely and Ferlin Huskey are still drawling the rustic blues, Cactus Jack is still shouting the hard sell pitches on the KEEN-AM side of Are gi'rs more observant than boys? New York. ---iijj'LrijJ'u'Lririr Answer: Their powers of observation are a 1 about equal. Each observes closely and recalls details that interest them. Girls tend to observe people and their conversations, clothing, domestic activities, flowers, etc. Boys more often observe transportation vehicles, tools, planes, boats, machines, along with weather phenomena such as rain, snow, ice and sun.

Small boys are observant of other males; later their interest turns toward females. Do most people dislike their jobs? Answer: Probably not. but many job-holders in mechanized work become more or less neutral about their work. Today's job frustration derives from the disassociation of the worker from the end-product he works on, thereby 1 GEORGE MARDIKIAN fine music A AM RADIO LOG Comlrad 440 and 1240 en (he dial Channel No. KTVU (SF.Oak.) Old-time carpenters, wheel-wrights, cobblers, enjoyed their 60 to 70-hour work week because it provided them with some ego-rewarding creative manipulation. Will food lessen alcohol intoxication? Answer: No, but that rather common belief may be advantageous if the chronic imbiber stops drinking when he begins to eat. Even then, it will not nullify the effect of whatever alcohol has already been consumed.

Some physicians frown on the practice of eating to absorb alcohol. They generally hold that alcohol itself has food value, and the combination of liquor and food adds up to far more calories than the average heavy drinker can effectively use up. (Copyright, '63. A jazz addict would call a special session of the legislature to get rid of it. But a vast number of people out there in radio land would call it delightful. As a contrast to KEEN-AM's cornfed yodeling, this KEEN-FM music is amazing. Jnto his tuneful multiplex stereo brew, George has stirred show tunes, dressed-up pops, demi-classical numbers arranged for big bands, familiar favorites from the "Funiculi, Funicula" school of tunesmithing, frequent organ recitals and occasional sad ballads by Frank Sinatra, Nat "King" Cole and such. Music to Match the Good Food He has grouped them in segments titled "Stereo Matinee," "Music of the Masters," "Evening Festival of Melody." "Music for Everybody," etc.

It is stuff he could play at his Omar Khayyam's restaurant without damaging the good food. George ventured into radio some 1(5 years ago at the urging of Floyd Farr and George Snell. Floyd was K.NBC's popular chief announcer and Snell was the management's first aide in charge of everything. They met Mardikian when he was doing KXBC chef and cooking shows. They had ambitious ideas for a station of their own.

Mardikian had the money. Could they make a deal? They could and did. They surveyed availabilities for a new station and wisely selected San Jose as the most promising future metropolitan market. They called their station KEEN and gave it balanced programming typical of the time. You know, a little of something for everybody, nothing much for anybody.

It didn't work. In the fiercely competitive four-station San Jose market overshadowed by thundering signals from big San Francisco stations, followed shortly by double-whammy knockout drops from upsurging television, they were soon in financial trouble. To survive, they became specialists, very successful ones, appealing to a particular group. And that is how George Mardikian, one of our most famous cosmopolites, became a country music man. Now, at last, he is doubling In "fine," "beautiful," "wonderful" music.

the dial at 1330. Multiplex Stereo But on the KEEN-FM side (100.3) where multiplex stereo has been installed, George Mardikian is broadcasting nostalgia-sweetened instrumental music, must listening for young old-timers who remember when rock and roll was a term to describe the motions of a ship in a high sea. His announcers variously describe it as "beautiful music," "fine music" and even "wonderful music."
