wr. it, i fa vacation guidi Summer Yachting on fTie Dea ftVer Roufe Exploring Some California Waterways By DON SELBY FEW AREAS In the United Statei can offer the yachtsman and his family a greater variety of conditions than are to be found in the San Francisco Bay area. With the vast Pacific just outside the Golden Gate and miles upon miles of navigable waterways of the Delta Region within easy traveling distance, San Francisco Bay itself is the hub of a magnificent water wonderland that invitingly beckons all of i nautical bent Many of those who spend most of the year sailing and powering on San Francisco Bay take "the river route" UNderhill 3-8550 fly withto Hawaii S99J race, but the small gall-boats keep iight on going. -And in August everything's going full blast again on the racing front come summer vacation time. The Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers and the hundreds of sloughs that wind lazily through the Delta are ideal for relaxation afloat.

The warm weather and warm water Paradise Cove side of the) Tiburon pennsula. Richard-. son's Bay is usually pleas ant, and it's nice along the Sausalito shore. Then, of course, there's the racing. That goes on all summer long, with championship action in all sailing associations throughout the month of June.

The big sailboats take it relatively easy in July, and the power cruisers take advantage of the July 4 holiday weekend for their annual San Joaquin River Sm TRANS INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES 9UUl.Y SCHEDULED SUPPLEMENTAL AIRLINI i add to the enjoyment for yachtsmen accustomed to the chill waters and exhilarating breezes of the Bay. Many a yachting family leaves its boat up-rtver for weeks or even months at a time, with the non-vacationing breadwinner commuting to it for long weekends much as though it were a mountain cabin or a house at the beach. Perhaps the favorite layover spot in the Delta is at Steamboat Slough, at its northern convergence with the Sacramento River. The city of Stockton is doing a nice job of accommodating yachtsmen at its Uptown Harbor, where visitors may tie up for as long as 48 hours, with showers and other facilities available.

Some of the spots are private. Grindstone Joe's on Potato Slough, for instance, is for members and their guests. Eventually the showplace of the Delta may well turn out to be St. Francis Yacht Club's Tinsley Island station, where the famous old Southampton Lighthouse Is scheduled to be relocated. Strictly for members and guests, Tinsley will be the gathering spot for some of the country's most prominent yachtsmen during the club's annual $100 per person Stag Cruise in September.

There is no typical route through the Delta. Some folks have been going there years and never yet have made the trip the same way twice. Most sailing people plan their start so they catch the flood tide no use making too much work out of a vacation. Bridge Marina is a good first night stopping place, and many put in at the end of the second day at Delta or San Joaquin Yacht Club. There overnight berthing is available for members of accredited yacht clubs.

By this time, you're on your own. How about Frying Pan Island, Mandeville Cut, Hog Island or Snod-grass Slough? Explore a bit. All this is not to say, however, that small boat harbors are deserted come vacation time. Far from it. Fact is, there's so much activity in most of them that it's hard to tell that any one has left.

Cruising on the Bay can be quite enjoyable, too, though probably not so warm. There are places where you can get out of the big wind maybe in Angel Island's Hospital Cove, sometimes on the Now!
