Spring" and "Repulsion," two widely acclaimed movies, have offered local viewers something a little more meaningful than the saccharine doings of Doris Day, or murder for the sake of murder as manifested jweekly on "High Chaparral" or the Saturday morntng cirtoons for kiddies. DREADFUL compounded rape and murder highlighted "The ViGgin Spring" and Catherine Deneuve butchered to death twmen as she descended into total madness in Repulsion, yet both films were works of distinguished motion picture art.

The station has been lauded by viewers for the "adult presentations. It also has been bashed over the head 6v a number' of protesters. Some protests appear to be from concerned individuals, others are group or circular tjye protests. I received a copy of one In the form of a petition bearing 56 signatures. fll'e, the undersigned," the petition states, "are for the ffibst part affiliated with local elementary schools in ibt Daly City area." The letter pledges them to boycott all adult movie" sponsors and to boycott all Channel 20 programs.

HOWEVER, the letter does not identify the schools 1 they are. affiliated with in Daly City or in any other city. Not one -signer has listed an address, home or business. Yet copies, purportedly, have gone to Governor Reagan, to the California Attorney General and the Federal Communications Commission. I fault them on two counts: (1) Petitioners who neglect to give address or affiliation have as much influence as a snowflake falling on the equator; (2) They have missed the boat by about 15 years.

Indeed, for more than 15 years, television programs saturated with violence, drenched with insinuating sex and patched together in cheap, rotten, penny dreadful westerns and whodunits have been boring daily and nightly into the eyes and brains of our children. I appreciate concern for the impact of these "adult" movies, but it might be more fruitful to throw weight against programs that preach killing for the sake of killing and I do mean "Combat," "Garrison's Gorillas," "Guns of Will Sonnett," "Rat Patrol," "It Takes a Thief," "Bonanza," "Cimarron Strip" and "Wild Wild West" to name a few that children habitually watch.
