Kahler is engaged in exhibitions of card manipulation for patrons of the Peacock Court.

He deals perfect poker and bridge hands without lifting an eyebrow. He amazes his audiences with feats of mental gymnastics such as calling off from memory each card of four hands of bridge at which he has glanced briefly before being blindfolded. Following this he allows a player to deal a number of poker hands and then calls each hand, suggests discards and calls the cards drawn. Kahler is versatile to the extent of authoring a number of books, and is a contributor to Town and Country Magazine. He was trained as an engineer at Ohio State University.

He became interested in cards as a lad of 10. He concedes, however, that his college training in engineering has been helpful in many mathematical card tricks. STARS CONTINUES AND HIS ORCHESTRA 3 SHOWS NIGHTLY i vm i a i a s. A i l. Temperatura of preceding day, RAINFALL DATA.

In addition, operators are confronted with a higher freight rate on lumber because of the necessity of the Maritime Commission acquiring a large fleet of American vessels for emergency and defense service.

The Commission is reported to have taken over more than a third of the ships in the intercoastal trade. This is producing a serious shortage of tonnaee in the lumber trade and, according to the West Coast Lumbermen's Association, is bound to freight rates, which tie carriers already have proncsed to from $16 to $17prr 1,000 feet. Such an increase, it was said, would affect the cost of lumber supplies for national defense projects which at present is the keynote of the lumber industry. On the basis of defense requirements for the first half of this year and the estimated need for the last six months, the industry will probably furnish close to a billion feet of lumber for defense before the year is out. Recently, the Interstate Commerce Commission postponed its order canceling out the proposed increase in tne intercoastal steamship lumber rate until August 26.

The effect of this action is that the Commission will now reconsider its disapproval of the rate increase and issue a final order on that date. Capt. A. 0. Lustie Takes Bremerton Navy Yard Post Capt.

Harbor Defenses to Hold Target Practice Office of the harbor defense commander yesterday notified shipmasters and small craft operators of service target practice with major caliber soacoast artillery which will be held tomorrow at Fort Funston. Maritime Academy Board Seeks Hearing on Base's Site Board of governors of the California Maritime Academy yesterday sought to arrange a meeting with Governor Olson In an attempt to reach an agreement on the selection of a site for the academy's new shore base. Dr. J.

A. Burkman, member of the board, announced in Sacramento that an apparent discrepancy in assembly bill 1078 appropriating $1,250,000 for the construction of a base "has thrown the question of a. site wide open." Burkman said the board would attempt to arrange a meeting with the Governor at the earliest possible date since July 19 is the deadline for the signing or veto ing of bills. 1 The discrepancy in the bill arises, Burkman said, from the fact that title states the appropriation is to be used for the construction and equipment of buildings and the improvement of grounds at Morrow Cove, while the body of the bill declares that the academy may be located upon San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay, Suisun Bay, the straits con necting any such bays or the mouth of any river flowing into such bays.
