A lifelong tennis enthu-iiast, Mr. Smith was an officer of the Oakland Tennis Club for about 40 years until the club disbanded during World War II Earlier, he had been both a singles and doubles tennis champion of the citv and in 1928 he won the Pacific Coast Veterans tennis championship.
