Page A'ed Aug 23, 1967 A Forceful Mystery Film With Racial I Overtones jp jean Arthur Will Return To road was NEW YORK I APi -Jean Arthur will return to Broadway next season with a set of drums for a comedy stint in "The Freaking Out of Stephanie Blake." Last seen on Broadway in a 1050 production of "Peter Pan," Miss Arthur will portray a i woman who gets involved with the "in" set on a visit to Greenwich Village. The play is by Richard Chandler. Miss Arthur emerged from retirement in C'armel last year to star in a short-lived TV series. I I Pi "In th Heat of the Night," which opens today at the Royal. Empire and El Ranrho Prive-In, has murder to solve within the vortex of a not-so-solvable problem of racial hatred.

It's quite a good movie forceful and interesting directed with much punch and pertinence by Norman Jewison who cast Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier as antagonists fortuitously thrown together in rather irregular circumstances for a mystery melodrama. Steiger has no choice but to ask for his co-operation because the slain man's wife l.ee Grant), also a northerner. demands to have Poitier put on the case.
