Corporate officials must sub mit to tax costs, which they have little legitimate opportun ity to shrink or expand in ac cordance with their own judg ment. In respect to taxes, they take the costs handed on to them by others, and attempt to pass them on to their custom ers, who are expected to meet all costs. Similarly the passage of the Wagner Act, making collective bargaining mandatory, and with the Wages and Hours Act, and the Social Security Act and other social legislation, no matter how beneficial or desirable they may be, tend to make wages a fixed cost handed on to man agement, rather than an inflex ible cost subject to discretion.

Likewise, the cost of goods and services purchased from others is largely a labor cost, since the suppliers operate in analogous labor market. Un der emergency conditions, price ceilings and arbitrary rulings the OPA concerning mark ups tend to put regidity into the costs of goods and services purchased from others. The part enables him to express much more genuine reeling man he. had any chance to do in "A Song to Remember." At first the husband does not know what his wife's unreasoning jealousy is all about. Soon he understands his plight all too tragically.

Another victim of the jealous woman Is her foster sister. And Jeanne Crain in this role very effectively completes the triangle of the story principal characters, MURDER SITUATION. Vincent Price is a young lawyer whom Miss Tierney has jilted Therefore, when she bequeathes to him a baffling murder situation he has reason to put some sharp passion of his own into his plea to a jury. Further characters who come within range of Miss Tierney's all-possessive selfishness are her mother (Mary Phillips), her hus band's sick boy brother (Darryl Hickman), and her rather, who as the film starts remains only as ashes and a memory. Technicolor does a lot for the effectiveness of "Leave Her to Heaven." The various scenic back grounds in New Mexico, New Eng land and the South are beautiful in themselves.

And their outdoor richness and brightness emphasize by contrast the moody story of a young woman who is willing to destroy herself so long as she can destroy the innocent people who she thinks are her enemies 'Student Prince' Curran Theater MORTON- courtyard at the village inn; glitter ing palace ballroom and austere study at Heidelberg. Particularly noteworthy is that every singing principal has a fine voice. Stellar achievements are contributed by silver-haired Alex ander Uray, baritone, as faithful Dr. En gel. and handsome young Toby XJurst, ex-glider pilot and tenor, the most convincing and satisfactory of recent title-role bearers.

Little Laurel Hurley is an appealing Kathie with a fine, clear soprano. Demar Poppen, as Lutz, and vol uptuous Nina Varella, are back in their familiar comedy roles, which they handle without care, to advan tage. By now they can probably recite their lines backwards. Josephine Cartwright, Mary Ann Walsh. Josephine LamDert and Walter Johnson turn in individually performances.

The famous male student Chorus is back to its pre-war strength, singing with gusto and much flourishing of steins, the popular "Drinking "Come Boys." and "Student Life." An attractive feminine chorus is also a pleasant surprise. Crosby, Ingrid Gate Feature "THE BELLS of St. heart-warming comedy-drama co- starring 1944 Academy Award winners Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman opens today at the Golden Gate. Written, produced and directed by Leo McCarey, whose "Going My Way" also earned him an Academy Oscar last year, the story again presents Crosby as lovable Father O'Malley. Miss Bergman is seen as Sister Benedict, Sister Superior whose educational ideas sometimes conflict with those of the good padre.

Crosby gets a chance to sing five numbers, including the theme "Adeste Fideles," a ballad "In the Land of Beginning Again." and the gay new tune "Aren't You Glad You're You." Ruth Donnelly. Henry Travers and William Gargan head the large supporting cast. A holiday stage program stars Dave Apollon, virtuoso of the mandolin and his company of entertainers, with Fred Lowry, whistler; Dorothy Rae, vocalist; Bob Dupont, juggler; Perry Franks and Janice, dancers, and the Gate orchestra with maestro Bud Moore. Mexico Revue Sets S.F. Date "MEXICO CITY FIESTA REVUE," gala Latin American musical, featuring popular south of the border singing, dancing and comedy stars, will play Scottish Rite Audi torium Sunday afternoon and eve ning, January 6.

The miraculous history of the automobile industry, giving the customer more for less, while increasing tax payments to Govern ment and wage payments to workers, demonstrates that resourceful management can achieve vastly better results than any statis "fact fiding" inquisitors have a right to demand or expect. The cinema saga of the rollicking and nefarious buccaneer has about as much color and spice as a bland hospital tray. Completely lacking is the rowdy spirit of outlaw adventure; the treacherous but gay camaraderie of high seas brigands, and feeling of tender romance between handsome swashbucklers and beautiful ladies in distress. On the credit side of "Captain Kidd" is a stellar cast who struggle to override the swells of dramatic doldrums. Randolph Scott, pretty Barbara Britton, Gilbert Roland and John Carradine work as much as they are permitted to instill some degree of suspense and storied excitement. As for Laugh-ton, he seems content to rest on past laurels in a characterization which fortunately, considering his inertia, combines the uncouth mannerisms of Henry the VIII and sadistic cruelties of one Captain Bly.

25. (INS) Rosemary Weglage, the 23 'year old Cincinnati girl who faces a slow and apparently inevitable death from a strange malady, opened her numerous Christmas gifts today. Rosemary, confined to bed since 1942 with a disease that is turning her to stone, was deluged with Christmas cards, presents and money. She added up her cash gifts and found she had approximately $200. Thousands of sympathizers have written the frail girl, who is afflicted with what doctors call "dermatomyositis."
