Peters, died of a heart attack while gardening at his Orinda home Saturday. He had served as a Supreme Court attache for six years, and before that practiced law in San Francisco and the Bay Area for more than 35 years. Born in San Francisco, Mr. Spiegl attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he was managing editor of the Daily Calif or nian, and earned his Law Degree at the University's Boalt Hall in 1927.

Mr. and Mrs. Spiegl. fellow students at Boalt Hall, married in Eureka, where her family lived, in 1933. Mrs.

Spiegl, of 303 La Espiral, survives him, as EVERETT SLOANE WEST LOS ANGELES -(UPI) Two hundred per sons attended funeral serv ices yesterday for motion picture and television actor Everett Sloane, 55, who end ed his life Friday with an overdose of barbiturates. Actors Ed Wynn, Keenan Wynn, Raymond Massey and Jim Backus were among the celebrities at Malinow and Silverman Mortuary for the services. Cremation followed the services. Police said Sloane com mitted suicide because of failing eyesight. Sloane, a slender, gray-haired character actor, was a member of "The Goldbergs" radio show for eight years and played featured roles in Orson Welles' motion pictures "Citizen Kane" and "Lady from Shanghai." NANCY CARROLL NEW YORK (AP) A private funeral is planned for Nancy Carroll, 59-year-old actress who died In her Man hattan apartment Friday night.

A spokesman for the Abbey Funeral Parlor said the family requested that there be no announcement of the time of the funeral or the place of burial. The death of Miss Carroll was discovered after she failed to appear for her performance in "Never Too Late" at the Tappan Zee Playhouse. Cause of death was not de termined. A medical ex aminer said Saturday, after an autopsy, that laboratory studies would be made. VICTOR JEROME NEW YORK (AP)-Vic- tor J.

Jerome, 68, a leader in the Communist Party in the United States, died Saturday in Bellevue Hospital of a brain tumor. He was chairman of the party's cultural commission and a former editor of political affairs, the Communist monthly. In 1953, Jerome was one of 13 party officials convicted here of conspiring to teach the overthrow of the U.S. Government by violence. He was identified during the trial as the man heading the party's effort to infiltrate U.S.

cultural affairs, espe cially in Hollywood. Following 1 realease from prison in 1957, Jerome spent several years in Poland and Russia before returning to New York in 1962. Lightning Kills Aged N.Y. Man NEW YORK (AP) Joseph Hegno, 71, was killed by lightning yesterday in a Brooklyn park during a brief thunderstorm. Police said he was standing outside the McCarran Park field house when he was hit.

Francisco. There are also two brothers, M. K. Spiegl of San Francisco and Ellis Spiegl of Salinas. In addition to his work in law, Mr.

Spiegl was a member of the Sanitary District in Orinda, his home for 25 years; helped with the move' ment to incorporate Orinda, and helped found the com munity library there. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Bayview Chapel of Freeman, Cox-Roach and Leonard, 2414 Grove, Berke ley. Burial will be at Rolling Hills Memorial Park, Rich mond. The family prefers memori al contnbtuions be made to the San Francisco Hearing Society.

DR. JAY PEARSON MIAMI-(AP)-Dr. Jay F. W. Pearson, first chancellor of the University of Miami and its second president, died of a heart attack early yesterday at his home.

He was 64. A native of Woodsfield, Ohio, Dr. Pearson received his bachelor of science in zoology at the University of Pittsburgh in 1925 and his master of science a year later. He taught there briefly before moving to Miami in 1926, when the university had one building, a faculty of 35 and an enrollment of 300. It now has 13,500 students and the physical plant is valued at $55 million.

GROWTH PERIOD He was brought to the University of Miami by Dr. Bowman F. Ashe, its first president, whom Dr. Pearson succeeded in 1953, when Dr. Ashe died.

Dr. Pearson's administration marked the period of greatest growth for the uni versity. Dr. Pearson held a Ph. D.

degree from the University of Chicago and was director of exhibits in biology and medicine at the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco in the late 30s while on leave from his teaching duties. AIR TRAINING He supervised aviation training schools at three military installations in World War II. Dr. Pearson married Hazel Manning Henrich in 1931 and they have one son, Michael Manning Lane Pearson, a sophomore at Vanderbilt University. An older son.

Jay F. W. died in 1963. A brother, Charles A. L.

Pearson of Pittsburgh, also survives. JAMES JARCHE LONDON (AP) The death of James arc he, cameraman whose pictures included some of the classics of newspapering, was announced yesterday. He was 74. Jarche, son of a French immigrant, was on the cliffs at Dover to obtain, the historic pictures of Louis Bleri-ot's landing after the first flight across the English Channel. That was in 1909.

Two years later he took the famous picture of Winston Churchill watching the battle of Sidney Street a gunfight between the military and Russian anarchists in Lon don's East End. Jarche's career, much of it with Odhams Press and the magazine Illustrated, included a spell with the Associated Press. He died in London on Friday. Peking Visitors TOKYO-(AP)-A delega tion from Cambodia led by Vice Premier Son Sann has arrived in Peking for what the New China News agency called a friendly visit to Communist China. Police said Clay was trying to eject an unruly customer at the Manhattan Club, 919 16th St. near Market Street. The bar is owned by Clay's mother. Mrs. Lenora Clay, and he lived in an apartment over the tavern.

There were several shots. At the same time, someone started stabbing and slashing with a knife. When it was all over, a man and woman were suffering from gunshot wounds, a husband and wife and another man were bleed ing from stab wounds. Police said they were seeking a man identified only as Curtis Smith for questioning In the shooting. The wounded, all from Oakland, were identified as: Cleveland Davis, 53, 1206 Market Street, hit in the chest by a bullet.

Martin Luther King said yesterday the United States should express its willingness to negotiate with the Viet Cong guerrillas to end the war in Vietnam. King declared, however, he would not call for unilateral withdrawal of U.S. forces 1 from Vietnam as a prerequi-t site for a peace conference, King said he was speaking as an Individual and would not Involve his Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the Vietnam issue. Pravda Fusses Over Joyriders MOSCOW (AP) The official Communist Party newspaper Pravda, which acts as watchdog on public morals in the Soviet Union, called yesterday for a crackdown on joyriding auto thieves. The Soviet Union has had relatively light punishment lor this type of theft -breaking into, a car, driving it around for a few hours, then abandoning it a maximum of 15 days in jail This has been raised to a year in jail.
