Oppenheimer Death yesterday closed another career that was an example of a combination of American opportunity and the will to achieve. Arthur C. Oppenheimer, the guiding force in Rosenberg the world's largest dried fruit processing firm, died at Stanford, Hospital, at the age of 65.

He had been ill for two months. Mr. Oppenheimer started with che firm he was later to head, when a boy of 14, and steadily climbed the ladder until he became president in 1937. For years before that he had been vice president and general manager. When the firm was merged with the Consolidated Grocers Corporation of Chicago two years ago, he again assumed the post of general manager.

BUSINESS LEADER. Most of Mr. Oppenheimer's waking hours were devoted to the huge Rosenberg firm and its many plants. His business and his home were said by associates to be the two primary interests in his life. He was recognized by everyone in the industry, from grower to processor, as probably the out-, standing figure in that business in the world.

Mr. Oppenheimer knew thousands of growers, who visited him frequently. There was almost unanimity of opinion among them that he was responsible more than any other man for the growth of the dried fruit industry, one of California's agricultural mainstays. In 1940, Mr. Oppenheimer, with a cousin, bought the famous Rancho San Carlos, an early day Spanish land grant and a show place of the Carmel Valley, and returned its 22,000 acres to their original use as a cattle ranch.

BORN IN SONORA. The family home was in Alameda for many years, but recently they moved to 1000 Mason Street in San Francisco. Mr. Oppenheimer was born in Sonora and left there and came to San Francisco shortly before he went to work for Rosenberg Brothers. He leaves his wife, Martha; a son, Arthur Oppenheimer II, of Piedmont, and two daughters, Mrs.

Clyde G. Whelden of Piedmont and Mrs. Clarence C. Kane of Hillsborough. The funeral will be held at noon today at the N.

Gray and Company mortuary, Divisadero and Post Streets. Paul J. Murphy Dies at 47 Services for Peninsula Contractor Monday Paul J. Murphy, 47, well known San 1 Carlos contractor and penin-. sula subdivision developer, died early yesterday at Stanford University Hospital.

The Trujillo girl broke a beer bottle against bar and smashed Morey in the face with the jagged stub. The policeman will be permanently scarred. The young woman was convicted by a jury last month. The same jury acquitted one of the sailors, Orville Phelps, 24, and failed to reach a verdict as to the second, Harold Foshay, 22. Superior Judge Albert C.
