Vr, Nov. 12, Htt MAN TELLS FIANCEE SHE MUST LOVE HIS MOTHER, ELSE THEY DON'T WED DEAR MARY HAWORTH: I am in a terrible dilemma. Please me. I am engaged to a man wfao 1 love very much but is, I fear, a mama's boy. He is 27 and lives alone with his mother; and, to be frank, I must say that 1 don't like her, although I have tried earnestly.

My fiance says he cannot marry a girl who isn't close to his mother, as it wouldn't be fair to her. He is very close to her. I told him I would do my best to get along with her and certainly I would be discourteous or inconsiderate; but we are so different that it would be impossible for me ever to be close with her. He can't understand this and insists that if I really loved him 1 would love his mother too. Is he right? Sincerely--C.

N. MAN IS STEEPED IN MOTHER'S VIEWS DEAR C. Your fiance is altogether wrong, of course, in presuming to tell you with dictatorial finality how you must feel about his mother, if. you are to be his wife. This amounts to attempted totalitarian control and exploitation of your personality, which is lamentable misuse of psychological intimacy.

However, his error is due more to ignorance than to studied fulneas, no doubt. In candidly making his heavy proclamation, to the effect that you (or tne girl who marries him) shall be a puppet in a triune relationship headed by his queen bee mother, the poor fellow is simply genuflecting to the forces that shaped his rubber stamp character. In the vernacular phrase, he just doesn't know any better. The purpose of marriage, as a thread in the fabric of cosmic creation, is to add a new branch, as it were, to humanity's "tree of life." For this reason a man is instructed--even by the Holy Scripture--to take leave of his parents (in terms of being weaned from them) and cleave to his spouse and helpmate. Whereas your fiance is demand- Ing that you reverse this growth process and regress with him back into the figurative womb of his mother's emotional masterminding of his married experience.

MAN MISCONSTRUES NATURE OF LOVE Your answer (as reported) was admirable. You will do your best to get along with the lady, using courtesy and consideration. But you must admit frankly that genuine closeness is out of the question on your part, due to naturally incompatible temperaments. No doubt the man and his mother recognize the truth and honesty of your statement, that Clear Photos Taken Of Moon real rapport isn't possible. And tor that very reason they are in effect putting pressure on you to subscribe to a sentimental pretense, that concedes mama the victorious upperhand.

Your fiance's thesis that if you really loved him, you would love 'his mother too, isn't necessarily so. But it does reveal what "love" (as a word) means to him. To him, love is a loss of freedom, a condition of possession and surrender, in which the strong devour the weak, in the sense that the latter obeys the dictates oi the former, without ever stopping to consult the requirements of his (or her) own integrity. In your fiance's scheme of things, his mother is the overruling force, quite obviously. You are wise to refuse to collaborate in the terms they offer.

To capitulate to their demands would be insidiously destructive to your psychological health. Moreover, it would be a disservice to the man to encourage him in such a sick-sick mismanagement of his attempts to make a meaningful' H.
