It starts at the junction of Lovers lane and Presidio boulevard and runs southwest to the Auxiliary Reservoir, then north to Arguello boulevard near Moraga avenue. 26C Mason street is named after Lieutenant Colonel Mason of the Engineers, who was in charge of the work at Fort Point in 1853. The naming of the streets after Spanish and American officers who made history for this country was the final work of Brigadier General P. Burnham, U. S. commander of the Presidio post, before he retired from active sen-ice last Friday on his sixty-fourth birthday after serving for forty-six years in the Army. As a birthday present on the eve of his retirement, the Government raised the army officer from the rank of colonel to brigadier general.

General Burnham had the rank of major general when he served with the expeditionary forces In France, where he was decorated by all the Hied countries for his extraordinary valor. When the armistice was signed the general was reduced to his former rank of colonel and assigned to the command of the Presidio of San Francisco, and found his superior officer to be his old classmate and chum at West I'oint, Major General Charles i. Morton, commander of the Corps Area. It was General Morton who recommended Colonel Burnham's promotion to brigadier general before he was automatically retired on account of age. NAMES SELECTED.

It starts from MacArthur avenue and runs southeast between the barracks of the West Cantonment, ending at the south end of MacArthur avenue.

Adjutant of the Presidio of San Francisco In naming- the streets in the Presidio of San Francisco, the names of Spanish and American officers who had been in command there and thereabouts in years gone by have been utilized for most of the streets.

Spain had claimed the Pacific Coast of North America up to 42 degrees for over 200 years, but had done nothing to maintain her right by settlement until in 1769 an expedition under Don Caspar de Por-tola was sent to take possession of and fortify the ports of San Diego and Monterey. While on this expedition San Francisco was discovered and it was decided to fortify it. Under the rule of Spain the administration of Californa was purely military. The territory was divided into four districts, each under the protection of a military post known as a presidio. FOUR PRESIDIOS.

The four presidios of California were San Diego, Monterey, San Francisco and Santa Barbara, On July 1, 1769, San Diego was occupied by Portola and his men, but it did not become a regular presidio until 1774. On June 3, 1770, Portola established the Presidio of San Carlos Borromeo de Monterey. On April 21, 1782, the Presidio cf Santa Barbara was founded by the order of Governor Neve and placed tinder Lieutenant Ortega's command.
