MARCH 12, 1926 CC SERVICE HEALTH TESTS INJURE TWO Candidate for Trolley Job Spine in Fall Off Ladder; Rival Injures Knee in Jump Intense competition for jobs 88 motormen and conductors on the Municipal Railway put two men in the Emergency Hospital yesterday, one with injuries that may cripple him for life. victims, hurt in physical tests before the Civil Service Commission were: Bowers, 923 Eddy street, dangerous injury to the spine, involving possible fracture, received while climbing ladder. Samuel Davis, 1550 Divisadero street, fractured knee, received while attempting a high jump. The physical efforts of rest of the class of sixty men continued, but it was said to be noticeable that there was a slowing up of attempts to be "top man' in the various tests.

According to the records of the Civil Service Commission, these two are the first to be injured in the physical tests of agility and strength required of applicants for street car jobs. Members of the commission deny that these are un. duly hazardous or dangerous. There are six tests required in the physical examination: Climbing ten rungs of a der, fastened to the wall, hand over Running high jump. with maximum four feet and minimum of three feet four Inches.

Nnrse So Healthy New Law Required WASHINGTON, March Universal Service.) --Miss Samar.tha Plummer, 69, and the oldest nurse in the United States Army, is so soundly healthy that Congress has been asked to pass special legistation SO she can retire 011 a pension, the War Department has announced. There is no regulation permitting army nurses to retire on pension, but the health record of Samantha Plummer inspired a bill in Congress which would make her and other nurses of distinguished service eligible for retirement. When Mrs. Zammit sued years ago, she was allowed 10 cents a day by the Maltese courts. Judge Graham held that in Malta such debts are outlawed after five years, so he allowed only 10 cents a day for the last five years, or $182.60.
