He pointed out that Christ and Mohammed had both recognized the validity of the laws of Moses, and that the civilized world had accepted both.

Why, then, i Californians are doing a lot of writing, and magazine editors and book publishers are beginning to believe that the literary center of the country is to soon be in this State. Some say that remarkable production from California is due to the year-around working climate, and that the country Inspires and the weather Is responsible for creating energy and stimulating the imagination. At any rate, Californians at home and abroad are taking the lead In literary work. One of the publishing houses that his faith in Californians is Doubleday, Page Co. of New York.

Mrs. Dell Munger, author of "The Wind Before the Dawn," a present big seller, lives lti? Palo Alto; James Francis Dwyer wrote "The W4ilte Waterfall," a South Sea in San Francisco; Stewart Edward White's Western books have always been In demand and his latest volume, "The Land of Footprints," is to, be published this fall. They are also Kipling's and the late O. Henry's publishers. Another California writer to be added to the Doubleday-Page list Is Frederick Ferdinand Moore, who has been on "The Examiner" editorial staff for several years.

In between his newspaper work and writing of short stories he produced a story laid in Manila and the China sea. It is "The Devil's Admiral," and will be oft the presses soon. It is a sea story of mystery and adventure in a tramp steamer, with characters true to their setting, for Moore knows the Far East well, having spent ten years as a sailor, cavalryman, scout and correspondent. He had fought his way around the world by the time he was twenty, and although still in the early thirties has 3-Piece Genuine Circassian Walnut Suit should there be factions In religion? In December, 1903, at the outbreak of the Japanese war, he decided to come to San Francisco, and sailed from New York by the "topside" route, visiting on the way Gibraltar, Spain, Morocco, Malta, Port Said, Cairo, Suez City, Aden, Colombo, Ceylon, Singapore, Manila, Japan, China and Manchuria. He reached here In August, 1905, in time for the fire of 1906. Moore knew James Francis Dwyer, author of "The White Waterfall," in the South Seas, and was beginning "The Devil's Admiral" Just as Dwyer EAUTY OF I III DOUBLES By Charles W. Storm. NEW YORK, October 12.

Commercial and manufacturing' Interests received assurances from the Government last week of at least one year of big business. These assurances were riven In the shape of the crop report, which promises commodity productions. Whatever doubt there was concerning some of the crops was removed by the publication of this report. It Is sthnated that the leading crops being raised this year will bo sold at an advance of $1,500,000,000 compared with the total money received last year. Such an Increase In the purchasing power of the farmers cannot help but be reflected by larger purchases by the tillers of the soil.

Larger buying by the farmers will give additional business to the Industrial corporations and railroads. It was therefore only natural that stocks of Industrial and railroad corporations should in many instances begin to discount the greater earnings expected tills year. Several Issues touched new high records for this movement. While all industries are showing Improvement It would not be making a misstatement In saying that the business done by the steel companies Is probably the greatest In their history. This was partly reflected by the unfilled tonnage statement Issued last week by the United States Steel Corporation.

Has Many Orders. Orders on the books of the corporation at the end of September were the greatest on record with the exception of June, 1907, when orders received from subsidiaries were also, counted, One large independent steel company advanced the prices of plates and structurals $1 a ton and this increase Is expected to be followed by the other large concerns. Announcement that the supply of copper metal in the I'nited States on October 1 was 16,000,000 pounds greater than on September 1 was construed by copper producers as favorable. Inasmuch as it will tend to keep the price of the metal below 18c. The Amalgamated Copper Company Is expected to increase Its dividend, in view of the large profits being received on copper sold at present prices and the greater income it is receiving from the Anaconda Copper Company.

Europe continued to liquidate American securities this week and it Is estimated that foreigners have sold about 350.000 shares of American stocks in New York within the last ten days. The money to be received from the sae of these securities is estimated at about 120,000,000. The Incentive for' the selling of American Btocks by Europe Is found in the Balkan war. Large American banking Interests, however, cannot see how the Balkan war can interrupt the prosperity now in progress in this country. No apprehension or anxiety is felt in connection with the money" market.

The advance In call rates on Thursday caused little concern, for many bankers are of the opinion that time money before the end of the year probably will rule close to 4 per cent. The inactive demand for time loans is due to the fact that many borrowers recently took more money than they actually needed.
