'THE SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER: SATURDAY. JULY 13. 1929 13 PROF. HYDE LANDS PUBLIC JOB AT LAST Former Stanford Savant, Candidate for U. S.

Senate, Is Put on Los Angeles Works Board By WILLIAM H. JORDAN "Uncle Jimmy" Hyde, known also as Prof. James M. Hyde, late of Stanford University, has popped up in a political job in Los Angeles. Word from the south yesterday told of Hyde's appointment to the Los Angeles board of public works by Mayor John C.

Porter. The news was the first intimation 1 that "Uncle Jimmy" had esanother plunge, into the political pool since he made his famous stepin and step out prima candidacy for United States senator in 1925 against Senator Samuel M. Shortridge. At that time Professor Hyde was a member of the Stanford University faculty in the pannouncement metallurgy. His of candidacy.

not only to the unicame at an embarrassing, versity leaders, but particularly, it was reportedly to Herbert Hoover, then of commerce and trustee of Stanford. It had been bruited about political circles that possibly there was a tion, ON HIS OWN. But after the situation had been mulled over a while the politicians figured out that "Uncle Jimmy" was running on his own, as he so declared. This went along to a point that ended all of a sudden by Professor Hylde's formal withdrawal after a flat assertion that the then Secretury Hoover had nothing to do with his ambitions to serve the State in the United States Senate. In withdrawing, "Uncle Jimmy" expressed his preference for former Congressman Walter F.

Lineberger of Long Beach, who was seeking the Republican nomination for senator but failed to make he grade against Senator Shortridge. In Accounted politics, a sort Professor of wild Hyde A mustang few years before all of this had written a. lot of letters for political consumption on the United States senatorship, which, started him off later on a campaign for himself. RESIGNED FROM FACULTY. Along in 1926 Professor Hyde was given a sabbatical leave from Stanford.

After that expired a year later he announced his resignation from the faculty. That was accompanied also by the announcement that he was returning to his profession of consulting engineer and would settle in Los Angeles, which he did do. And now as a climax to much of Professor Hyde's years of battering around in the political world, he steps into the new city administration of the southern city. And some of the boys hereabouts familiar with "Uncle Jimmy's" activities aver that some times "things come to him who waits."
