And while shopping for school supplies usually marks the dreaded end of summer and a transition back to the classroom, it's an opportunity for kids to select packs and lunch boxes that reflect their unique personalities. "For some kids, their backpack is their lifeline," said Jody Fossum, product manager for footwear accessories at Kids. "That's why we build 'extras' into our bags that can accommodate a child's needs and stand up to his or her busy schedule." Fossum advises parents to purchase a backpack made of a lightweight, yet durable nylon or polyester, which is measured in a unit called a ''denier.
