A more romantic world. In fine, A better world to woo in Frederick Locker. The society girl of to-day is beginning to be vaguely conscious that there is something- nnasual about the attitude of news- papor literature toward her.

She doesn find any more of tboe immemorial wails about ths decadence of modern femininity and the infinite superio.ity of her grandmamma. In fact, she not infrequently happens upon a little outburst of printed pride in the beauty, the verve and the cleverness of the girls of to-day, accompanied by a com-parison with their which is much to the vantage of those greatly overrated ladies. It is a new departure in literature which, ever since civilisation began, has industriously propagated the belief that the cxia.iug generation of women waa inferior its immediate redecessors. The slings and arrows ol outrageous paragra pliers hare been clrected at feminine follies so continuously that it is iusti liable to assume that at last they have demolished the target. Like the inother-in-law joke, which has finally become too riddled to offer a fair mark, (he girl of the period has won a certain immunity from attack by having stood up so long to be shot at.

Her mind, her soul, her body, and even her clothes, have ceased for the present, at least, to be the favorite BUbject for disapproving criticism. It is just possible that this pleasant state of atfairs is only part of a movement" the toft-hearted, modern movement toward the rchabilitati of all the time-worn victims of human reprobation. We are told that Lucrezia Borgi was a terribly maligned person, and that there was nothing at all in that scandalous little poisoning story; that Henry VIII was a most amiable, accomplished and exemplary person; that beautiful Mary Stuart was a martyred saint, and Richard III the innocent scapegoat of hers' sins. We a- tender to the lite-ary crimes of our Spring poets that, a reviewer is forced to yearn for the reappearance cf sme of those "dull, ferocious brutes" of critics, who used to decimate the tanks of poetasters. And her contemporaries are in thinking no girl of any age could have been charm-inn in so many different ways. There is a brightness an vigor and enterprise about her which has upset a good many pet theories about feminine incompetency. She is no longer a hopelessly "fluctuating and she h'is opinions which are wotth listening to. the is more sensible, more better educated, and. in the lull ten.se of the term, better dressed than her average grandmother.

To see her swimming at Santa Cruz, rowing at Siucelito. playing tennis at Monterey, and walking, riding, driving everywhere, is to be convinced that she is infinitely sounder and heal hier and, consequently, happier than the girls who were wooed and won fifty years ago. But, uiihapi iiy for her future, the is superior to the ma ority of her wooers, and she has a constantly diminishing number of them to choose om.
