Clair Knight, aged 11. fired a bullet Into his brain lasj night rather than face the disgrace of having appropriated money not his own. He and another school boy, Melvin Hensley, had found the hiding place of money belonging to Camllle Silver, a carpenter.

They were using this liberally to attend moving picture shows, and then came the day of exposure. Seeing Silver approaching the home, Clair Knight scribbled a note Baying: am accused of stealing money, mother. It is driving me crazy. I can't stand it any longer." After the shot, fired in an upstairs room, the body of the boy was found sitting upright on the floor. The lad was a son of Mr, and Mrs.

BmW. native of Sweden, aged 82 ears: a mis.be I BY MOLLIE MERR.CK. "Thirty-flve hundred miles from home and no friends." That's the way a blue-eyed South- erner out at Letterman Hospital put his story to us yesterday. He's a crutch case, this boy, and for six weeks he's been sitting on that broad hospital veranda watching the luckier fellows chatting with friends and eat- ing his heart out for someone to talk to. "Women folks." he says, to remind him of home.

Women folks to brush away for a few glad moment memories that have faded from sharp horror to say gray monotony. There are theater tickets to be had for the asking, he tells us, but if you're too nervous to swing on crutches on and oft the cars and through the thick of the traffic the privilege Is of no use to you. He declared that Costa Rica would receive arms and support from other Central American republics, while Panama would be without means of defense.

A committee of seven deputies was name! for the pqrpo.se of studying the note to the Panaman government by Secretary of State Hughes, which suggested the acceptance of the White award. The committee will also consider the reply of Panama, which has been drafted and approved by a conference of promiiient citizens of this country. This projected reply would oppose acceptance of the White award and would suggest that other means for reaching a peaceful settlement be found. The committee was given five days in whichto make its report, Bodies of Nine Heroes Of War Coming Home Bodies of nine war veterans exhumed in France will arrive tomorrow morning at the Oakland mole. J. Mcllale, arandfather of Hert and Ijeonard Johnson, a native of Cincinnati. Ohio, seed 71 years 5 months. just sit day in and day out hoping and praying for a day of release. STRANGE IN SAN FRANCISCO.

Strange, that such a thing could happen in Francisco. We, with our motto, "San Francisco knows how." Are we going to let these boys say that San Francisco knows how to forget? "Patriotism isn't dead; it's Just sleeping. It'll wake up some day, all right." And they smile away the suspicious brightness in their eyes. And so it will. But what is going to happen in the meantime? Foundations of bitterness are being laid, not because we do not care, but because we are leaving it all to the other person, forgetting our wartime lesson that great work is accomplished by every man doing his bit rather than by a few deeds of startling mag- nitude.

There's a Middle West boy out there, a farmer's son. He's been in the hos- pital for many months, and it looks as if there would be a long stretch ahead of him yet. He has had crowds of. sweet-faced, smiling women clustered about his cot at Thanksgiving and 'Christmas. Cheer and song and flowers and cigarettes and ripe-cheeked fruit have been his at those times.

"But it's either a feast or a famine," he says. "It's a long stretch yet to the Fourth of July, and I guess they won't come again until then." IT'S A LONG STRETCH. It is a long stretch from Christmas to the Fourth of July. Too long a stretch for a lad who has given his "full measure of devotion" to have to wait for a woman's sympathy and cheer. Only a gentle hand can break the bitter, apathy that is fast settling upon these boys whom fate has robbed of the Joy of going forth to meet the world.

The world must come to them, and come joyously, to pay its debt of gratitude or try to pay what can never be fully recompensed, A few days ago we printed in our columns a letter signed "A Hospital Patient." We have not been abie to locate this boy by name and letters and messages for him are rapidly cumulating at "The Examiner" office. His direct appeal to the friendly heart of San Francisco has already won for him more than one friend. The letters which reach us every day show that it is not so much for-getfulness on the part of the public, but rather bewilderment as to how to go about the carrying out of their wishes. One received yesterday carries this message: During my ten months' residence in San Francisco I have had both the time and the inclination to cheer some lonely soldier-patient at'Letterman Hospital, but I didn't know just how to go about it. LET'S SHOW THEM.

I wonder if it would be asking too much of you to send me the name of some boy who has no friends here, or to tell me whether to telephone' the hospital or just go out on visit-ors' day? There's a friend for some boy. We'll mail her a name tomorrow. We'll get that name from the tfflce flies, for they tell the story in so many eases. It's a lonely chap whose registry slip a blank where it should hold the names of friends or relatives to notify in the event of his death.
