that flies to the other side of the world on another hopeless quest next winter All of them are far from championship class One has to look clear down to No 12 to find Bob Perry the coast kid for whom high hopes were held a couple of years back Some supreme optimists hold the hope that Trabert will be good enough to win both his singles in the next challenge round and that he and Selxaa will repeat their doubles victory of last winter That would of course be sufficient but the odds are long against it happening AVAR ABLE OR IMMEDIATE GW Track Team Defeats HMA 58 55 Yesterday The eight teams of Redbirds got effective four hit pitching from Charlie Smiley and power hitting from Jackie Phillips The GW team now has scored a total of 105 runs tin the 10 games while holding the combined oppo Douglas with three for four and Smiley with a double and single in four trips accounted for all of GW's eight hits GW got off to a 2 run lead in the first inning when Dickie Doug las singled as first batter After Sonny Williams went out on an in field fly Phillips sent a towering home run blast over deep right center Covington picked up single runs in the second and third innings to knot the count Christmas Day in 1925 may be a summertime Santa Claus for the Detroit Tigers in 1954 No longer bothered by a trick knee the curve balling right hander has given strong indica tions ready to become De only popping out being done is by en emy batters With two straight complete game victories the 28 year old Garver seems to have regained his mound magic of three seasons ago when he won 20 games for Aussie phenoms Hoad and Ken Rosewall in his most recent attempt In fact he carry a set to deuce Then if still looking our No 3 is Art Larsen the left hander who won at orest Hills in 1950 and has done nothing of note since He is automatically out as a cup candidate anyway as the Austrialians found Art a too strong stimulant when he visited them a few years back and suggested dlplomatlcaUy that he be kept far from their shores thereafter Gardnar Mulloy the No 4 still is a remarkably fine tennis player at 40 but his presence that high in the line up only serves to reemphasize the scarcity of young talent in the country In his case too the Cup Selection Committee has given ample evi dence for several years that it does not consider him a candidate And from there on down to No 10 in the national ranking the story is much the same Both Straight Clark No 5 and Ham Richardson No 6 have been toted to Australia in recent yean with the cup squad and hare not come close to playing in the
