Address, I A. Bpttle riwtt, Mirft. am A Loot Flower, Orgse's Melody ad a Woman'! Word! fteemed to Dispel the Horror of the Tragedy.

Tbs body of Mrs. Grlffei, the young woman murdered In the Grizzly Bear aaloon by Martin O'NMl, woe removed from the Morgue to a Goary street undertaking establishment on Saturday, where yesterday afternoon simple offices for the dead were performed. The curtains of the little room were closely drawn, subduing the glare of the morning sun. A redwood coffin with silver bandies was in the centor of the room resting on pedestals. Flowers lay on the coffin, but they did not uggest the midnight tragedy.

They bad all the fresh, unstained loveliness and purity that fragrant blooms may display. There were no roses, but there was a large cluster of white lilacs and several simple bunches of other flowers, Including a loose mass of variegated sweet peas. The flowers were the simple symbols of sympathy and sorrow, brought by a few of the closer friends of the dead woman and her husband. No announcement of the funeral bad been made and but scarce a dozen intimate friends were seated in the room, when the bush Inside was broken bv the soft strains of When Other Lips and Other Hearts," coming from a cottage orean in a little gallery. This bit of melody had been one of Mrs.

Griffes' favorites. There was no singing Just the pathetic sweetness of the notes. Then Charlotte Perkins Stetson arose from ber chair at one side of the room, and stepping to the head of the coffin spoke simply and briefly for a few minutes. She glanced down at the placid face and began to talk of the human lesson of the time, without isnaking direct reference to the manner in which death had come. The greatest honor aud the best tribute which we can pay to her," the speaker aaid, "is to live better and nobler lives be-cause of ber death to live so that such things may not come.

She was a woman with a noble heart and large sympathies, but circumstances comparatively small brought tbla sorrow. Such things must happen In human life, but let us all live so that no responsibility for them will be upon us. The immediate circumstances we can trace, but the real causes lie broad and deep in society and human life. We are inclined to be too tolerant with little departures which conscience and right do not sanction. We may become sharers in the responsibility for such sorrows.

"Let us, I say, live nobler and purer Hves, and let our hearts go out to each other more freely. We restrain too much our impulses to send forth our love and helpful sympathy. Our unity with Ood bas been taught through centuries, but let us teach and feel our unity with each other." When the low but distinct words of Mrs. Stetson had ceased, and she bad quietly resumed ber seat by the busoand's side, there was a silent pause, broken a few minutes later by the hiJdon organ, which a friend was This time it was the softly swellitig cadence's of Nearer, My God, to Thee." A few eyes moistened with silent tears, and the hymn was sooa finished. Some one stepped to another room and spoke to the undertaker, who came in and said that any one who wished to take a last look at the deceased would now hare an opportunity to do so.

All glanced into tne coffin and saw a sleeping face on which was no sien of pain. Then four friends lifted the coffin and its loads of flowers and bore it through the sunshine to the waiting hearse. The friends in carriages folio Aed the hearse to Third and Towrsend streets, where two other corteges were awaiting the departure of the funeral train to the cemeteries at noon. Thn remains, whicn have been embalmed, were taken to Cypress Lawn Cemetery and placed in the receiving vault, where they will rest until the new crematory to be erected is completed, and then they wUl bo cremated.
