D-8 Wednesday, October 14, 1998 SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER 1 TOM STIENSTRA Tteiraipsf aft hart If dlectors7 Jymn staidly Sights, sounds of near-perfect duck opener in the Grasslands xZ ypfriT 1 1 -A APPETER LENNHAN Mike Tyson, seen leaving Massachusetts General Hospital last month after psychological tests, should receive ongoing therapy, doctors say. opener, it appeared they could have taken a limit in 45 minutes. "What fun is that, getting done by 7:30 and then spend the rest of the day looking at each other?" Ottesen asked. "We take our time and enjoy the moments, identifying the birds, watching them fly, listening to them." In the dawn light, looking overhead, that can be a challenge, looking for the blue speck on the wing of a mallard or the white patch on a gadwall, for instance. The two hunters spent all morning sharing the marsh with the wildlife around them, deciding to try for only large ducks, no small ones, such as teal, and by noon, decided to head out, taking with them five mallards, two sprig, two widgeon, two gadwall and three wood ducks.

Elsewhere in the valley on opening weekend, the results were not as stellar, especially in areas where farmers are harvesting late crops. Specifically, Butte Sink had a good opener followed by a poor Sunday, Yolo Bypass was OK on the opener, poor on Sunday, Suisun Marsh had a poor opener, and then by 10 a.m., the ducks migrated to protected zones at Grizzly Island and Joice Island. In the Sacramento Valley, the opener has been delayed until Oct. 24 at several wildlife refuges due to a late rice harvest: Sutter, Colusa, Delevan, Dry Creek, Howard Slough, Gray Lodge. The 20 state and federal wildlife areas and refuges in California are open for duck hunting generally on Wednesdays and weekends.

Most are good for bird watching the rest of the time, especially the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area at the Suisun Marsh near Fairfield. The Grasslands, however, provides the best opportunity to see the recent huge influx of waterfowl, not only ducks, but ibis, swans and others, with huge V-wedges of geese expected in the next month. Though privately owned, it is open to the public for birdwatching. For an information packet with a self-guided auto tour, write Grasslands Water District, 22759 South Mercey Springs Road, Los Banos, CA 93635, or phone at (209)826-5188. By Dean Juipe LAS VEGAS SUN LAS VEGAS If there's a common thread through the 41-page psychological profile of Mike Tyson compiled by a team of doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital and released by the Nevada State Athletic Commission Tuesday, it's Tyson's need for ongoing therapy.

While the tone of the report is generally favorable toward Tyson, the team of psychiatrists, psychologists and neurologists repeatedly recommend that Tyson continue receiving therapy for his behavioral problems. The report neither advocated nor opposed the NSAC relicense Tyson when he appears before it Monday. But it did conclude, "We believe that the risk of such a re-offense is low" in reference to Tyson committing a foul within the boxing ring. Tyson's boxing license was revoked by the NSAC July 9, 1997, as a result of his being disqualified for twice biting the ears of Evander Holyfield during a heavyweight championship fight June 27, 1997, at the MGM Grand Garden. The NSAC insisted upon Tyson undergoing a battery of tests before it would consider relicensing him.

With the commission's five members now in receipt of the Massachusetts General report, the hearing on relicensing the former heavyweight champion will take place as scheduled Monday morning. "I was very pleasantly surprised," Tyson's lead attorney, Jim Jimmerson, said of the report. "This is a hard-hitting report and it's a favorable report. It shows he's not suffering from any psychological disorders and it deems him to be mentally fit." Nonetheless, Tyson didn't come through the testing sessions unscathed. On at least two occasions he came across as confrontational to his testers.

One, Dr. Thomas GUSTINE, Merced County When you're doing what you love, explained the duck hunter, you don't rush the moment. "Listen out there, and take it in," said Pete Ottesen, his eyes peering over tules and scanning across miles of wetland habitat. "Listen to the whir of the wings, the squawks and the whistles of all the different birds." The sun was a fire-glow ball as it climbed over the horizon and the marsh came to life. From a distance, there was a resounding screech, and Ottesen turned, and then spotted 30 or 40 endangered sandhill cranes cruising above his hiding place, their giant wing beats silhouetted in the dawn light.

"This is magic stuff, to see things like this," he said. "For me, the opening of duck season is the greatest day of the year." Opening day was Saturday in California, and while most people were in bed sleeping, duck hunters instead saw the residuals of last year's El Nino winter: Large numbers of birds of many species, the result of excellent habitat conditions, that is, an abundance of water, feed and healthy vegetation. Ottesen had returned to his favorite marsh in the Grasslands, the state's largest contiguous wetland habitat, roughly between Gustine and Dos Palos at the head of the San Joaquin Valley. This marsh was the best duck hunting in the state, where 43 registered hunters had a 6.97 bird average, just one bird under a perfect average of a seven-bird limit. It turned out that one old-timer didn't fill his limit, he said, because if it were a perfect day, then how could one ever hope for better in the future? Well before dawn, Ottesen and his longtime hunting partner John Struve settled into their blind, hidden amid tules and adjacent to 150 decoys.

Before legal shooting time, 6:37 a.m., they listened to the whistling of wings in the darkness. "Climbing into a blind is like going to a dramatic play or opera, there's so much to take in Ottesen said. "What some people don't realize in an urban society is that they aren't using their five senses, especially their ears. They don't hear the whir of the wings." Across the marsh, there was a "beep, beep, beep," and sure enough, along came a flock of blacknecked stilt later there was a "chirp-chirp," and Ottesen looked over, then pointed to this little bird running from tule to tule, an Audubon warbler then something that sounded like a high-pitched "oink-oink" was repeated several times, hidden in the tules. "That's a Virginia rail," Ottesen said with a smile.

"Youll hardly ever see them, but they'll see you, and if you pay attention, you can hear them." The Grasslands is the best testimonial in California as to how hunting can benefit wildlife populations. It is funded solely by duck hunters, who pay for habitat protection of 160,000 acres of wetlands; there are no shopping centers, housing tracts, parking lots or asphalt highways that destroy homes for wildlife. In the process, habitat is provided for a documented 550 species of birds, animals and unique plants, 260 of which are birds, and of those, only 19 are hunted, all ducks and geese. Ottesen, 54, has been hunting for 43 years, since he was 11. His partner, Struve, 76, has been hunting since he was 12.

Together, they are such experienced dunk callers and good shots that on the "emotional deficits make him susceptible" to unpredictable behavior, although that trait would be manageable "with weekly, if not more frequent, psychotherapy sessions." Another tester, Dr. David Me-doff, concludes that "findings suggest that (Tyson) is angry and irritable, and that he is cautious and even suspicious of others' motives at times." Medoff, like Deters, had an uneasy moment with Tyson. "He expressed a 'wish' to harm this'evaluator because of his humiliation at this evaluation," Medoff wrote in his report to the lead physician, Dr. Ronald Schouten. "However, at no time did this eval-uator feel physically threatened or endangered." Medoff recessed his evaluation until the next day, at which time "Tyson apologized for his verbal statement made the day before." Tyson told a third tester, Dr.

Jeremy Schmahmann, that the testing process made him "feel like I'm in a concentration camp." Deters, said Tyson "indicated he was angry and apprehensive about having to undergo our evaluation and at one point he expressed deep feelings of anger directed at me." Deters, a psychologist, added that Tyson "indicated he was not very good at reading. I did not push the issue. However he became much less engaging in the interview and the evaluation process." Deters goes on to recite Tyson's "apparent history of depression and significant mood fluctuations" and that those "findings are a concern to me. Mr. Tyson exhibited neurobehavioral and emotional difficulties, as well as many strengths.

He seems resilient in light of a history of many obstacles. He exhibited intelligence that seemed to be beyond what is reflected in some of his test scores. He seems to have a clear recognition that his behavior in the Holy-field fight was completely inappropriate and he expressed remorse for his behavior."
