Kidney, 27, both of Alameda, Calif, Adventurer Claimed by Death Here Death came yesterday for Frank Joseph Mackenzie, 74, known to adventurers as one of the foremost of their numberand known to the world for his "backgrounds" only. Born a Londoner, Mr. Mackenzie went to South Africa to find adventure in the Matabelle Rebellion, the establishment of Rhodesia and the Boer Warmeanwhile contributing firsthand sketches to London papers. Sole survivor of the party that discovered Rhodesia's Wankie coal field, he led a second party to rediscover the lost mineral deposits.

Mr. Mackenzie came to San Francisco in 1910, carried out commissions for the United States Biological Survey, and became famous- -through his knowledge of African scenery- for "background" paintings for museums throughout the world. Some of these paintings are in the South African natural history exhibit at Simson Hall, Golden Gate Park. Mr. Mackenzie leaves a widow, Florence, also an artist, of 150 Twentieth Avenue.
