"Crooked Circle," THE SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER: SATURDAY, JULY 1.

1933 World's Greatest Picture Spread Over 157 Years Imaginary Visit to America of 1776 Discloses Almost Unbelievable Change By ANNIE LAURIE 1 776-1933-not such a very long time AS time goes, from the first Independence Day to this very FOURTH OF JULY. One hundred and fifty-seven years why, that's a mere nothing in the history of a race or even of nation. But what a lot has happened in that time. If somebody by some strange magic should turn the clock in reverse for a day and throw us all back into George Washington's time for just one little week -what a lot of helpless, confused creatures we would be. No gas, no electricity, no radio, no telegrams, no typewriters, no motor cars, no railroad trains, no steamships, no public laundries, no airships, no stationary tubs, and no builtin bathtubs, either, mind you that.

And whisper, wasn't every one of these things invented in America? Nothing but open fireplaces to heat your house, and cook your food--not a refrigerator on earth, and nine women out of ten carding the wool and weaving the material for their own dresses, yes -and making the homespun for their husbands' clothes, too. running into town for a bit of shopping as a mere incident of the day-no, thank you, not with the roads nothing but cow paths, and New York five or six days or more from Bostonand no such place as San Francisco on the face of the earth. Every, girl time who she was 20 not was mar- a hopeless old maid and every married woman of 35 who didn't have at least four children under foot -a nobody, and a nothing. No such thing as divorce, and every man supporting as a matter of course, not only his wife and children, but any forlorn sisters and aunts and cousins on either side of the house. Not a woman in business for herself, or any anyone else.

Housework was a woman's work and she did that or she did nothing. No League of Women Voters in those days, no W. C. T. U.

and no Y. M. C. A. -goodness, what a queer world.

UT the great Essentials -the B' Eternal Verities- -they don't seem to have changed much, do they? Murder is still murder, a thief is still A thief, love is still the song in the heart, and the laughter of happy children is still the finest music in the world. Age is still jealous of Youth, and Youth still flouts at Ageand gets away with it. Beauty is beauty just. as it was when Eve gave Adam A. bite of the nice, new, rosy apple, One hundred and fifty-seven years ago the United States of America was a good deal of a joke in the courts of Europe, and the new breed of people called Americans was just something to make 8 funny song about--but somehow or other the world doesn't laugh so hard any more -not at America.

ND it you and I were to be born again tomorrow we'd choose the little old U. S. A. to be born in--if we had A grain of common sense, and even a small streak of honest ambition. This country as it is today is no paradise--but it is still the best place for the average everyday man and women to live and work and bring up a family.

Oh, Old Glory doesn't always look as bright and fresh and immaculate as it should, but, after all, take it by and large in season and out of season-investigations, probes and sensational discoveries about this, that and the other Great Interests and how the Great Interests are sometimes run--nevertheless the Stars and Stripes make the brightest, gayest, most hopeful flag in the world. And I'm just old-fashioned enough to think that I'd rather be a plain citizen of this country today than to be the King or the Queen of any other country under the sun. Wouldn't you? Honestly now. Forget the fads and the isms a minute and let your own real heart. speak and tell the plain, courageous truth--today.

Funeral Directors Here to Draft Code LAKE GEORGE (N. June 30. -(AP)-America's funeral directors will draft a code of fair trade practices at regional meetings in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Kansas City and San Francisco July 20, John W. Mattle of Rochester, presiof the National Funeral Directors' Association announced today. DELAYED? Madam, why worry when Nature falls you? NEOFEM, the Private Prescription of Dr.

Used by thousands. Liquid or Capsules. At Leading Druggists. S. M.

Laboratories, Seattle, Wash. 0 I BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS The Way of a Ranger REGIS TOOMEY and Barbara Weeks in a scene from the Border Patrol thriller, "Soldiers of the Storm," which comes to the Fox today. Miss Stanwyck Does Some Climbing in 'Baby Face' By Lloyd S. Thompson BARBARA STANWYCK climbs, over the prostrate bodies of many male victims to get 1 to her penthouse in "Baby Face," now at the Warfield. For sixty-five minutes of the picture she displays an almost Hitlerian lack of scruple, but in the last five she goes soft, gives George Brent a half-million dollars to save the bank, and goes joyously with him back to the steel mills and the washtub.

The latter part of the picture is too much like a good many others; the earlier scenes are naughtier, and therefore much more fun. Miss Stanwyck starts her climb when the family still blows up and kills her poor old pappy, Beginning with the doorman on the walk in front of a New York skyscraper, she climbs story by story with the aid of the "St. Louis Blues" and "What Every Woman Knows" until she is ensconced in a penthouse, for which the president of the bank pays the rent. Everything seems rosy and the way of sin begins to look unusually attractive. But the fourth vice president (Donald Cook), rises from his prostrate position, wipes the marks of Miss.

Stanwyck's dainty heels from his brow, and shoots the president (Henry Kolker). Enter George Brent, the new president, who ships the trollop to Paris, only to follow her there and wed her. Along comes the depression, which leads to the great change of heart mentioned above. The picture is fun, until the final THRILLS, MYSTERY FELT IN 'NUISANCE THRILLS and mystery vie with screaming comedy situations in Lee Tracy's latest picture, "The Nuisance," which heads the St. Francis program today.

Tracy is seen as an ambulance-chasing shy-, ster lawyer, who outwits juries and attorneys, including the district attorney- a girl detective is put on his trail, and to prevent her from testifying against him marries her! Madge Evans, the comical Butterworth and Frank Morgan' are in the supporting cast. The other feature, "I Love That Man," abounds in comedy, sobs are reached. It is daring material which should draw throngs of good citizens to the box office. The moral vein which runs through it is quite desultory, and, not until the very end does it prevent Miss Stanwyck from behaving like an utterly wanton Jezebel. While I consider the theory, that naughty movies can the young to orgies of lechery a rather dubious one, it still might be a good idea to run across the street and ask Mrs.

Sweeney to look after the kids while you see "Baby Face." It makes sin look far more attractive -and profitable--than it really is. Fanchon and Marco offer an amusing stage frolic in which the pleasant-voiced young tenor, Jetfrey Gill, again is featured. A trio of roller skaters tapdance merrily and Ramon and Virginia contribute an amusing eccentric dance number. Esther Campbell. does plain and fancy whistling, and three comedians "direct from New bring chuckles from the customers.

The Sunkist Beauties pirouette about in unusually ravishing costumes. Jan Rubini conducts the orchestra in the "1812 Overture," with benefit of artillery. With or without ordnance, the Tschaikowsky work is a big job for an orchestra of fifteen pieces. Rubini does it well and a broadside of applause. I pointed out the difficulty of the selection to a wag who sat beside me.

"Sure," he said, "It's a swell trick, even if they don't do it." 'CHANGE YOUR AT CAPITOL SUNDAY THE CAPITOL stage, which in its time has seen some decidedly "warm" entertainment, is said to be in for a "hotter than hot." time with the opening of an all-colored tomorrow at noon. The offering is titled "Change Your Luck," and is hailed as a sizzling demonstration of high-brown hilarity and pep. The Sepia Four are said to have feet that are faster than the eye. The show shifts from Harlem night club scenes down to the negro spirituals of the old South. America Population Jumps 3 Millions to 125,000,0000 WASHINGTON, June -The population of the United States, has 1930, to increased a new high 2,917,954 of since 693,000.
