Finlay, vice president of the Cleveland Trust Co, In an interview appearing In the Burroughs Clearing House, 'points out that, while the bank Is doing all it can to avoid foreclosure actions, nevertheless at times, they are necessary. What then Is to be done? On this he says: "There are two ways of meeting the problem of repossessed home. One Is to regard It 'as a tragedy, and to make no effort to remove the traces of former (Ownership, but to sell It as cheaply and as quickly as possible. However, the presumption that the amount shipped will be replaced helps to explain why the dollar was only 2 cents cheaper, at $4.91, although the theoretical value, with gold in the United States at $32.84, is at least $3 to the pound. Lombard Street was not Impressed by the United States' initial gold purchases through the Guaranty Trust, but expects an early announcement that the United States is prepared to accept all foreign gold tendered. One Pails bank is reported to have arranged a large test shipment as a speculative operation.

These benefits to the South have already been observed In reports to nationwide distributing organizations, which are represented south of the Mason and Dixon line. The course of the seasons, affecting crops, helps to explain why political discontent Is hot In the Middle West in the corn-hog belt, rather than in the South. My conversations with agricultural experts In the Federal service, however, indicate that the Middle West will soon begin to feel some of the benefit.

Checks to farmers for reduction of wheat acreage will soon be mailed out, and the corn crop loans will start to go out after the turn of the year. Incidentally, these payments for acreage reduction and for similar purposes under the Farm Act arc highly rcflatlonary in character. They offer a channel for distributing purchasing power. Would not the Name fate overtake the money if the loan were not made, and the money remained in the bank? Indeed, would It not be better to make the loan, since the money would draw interest, while, If not loaned, It would still be deflated?" Luther R. Stein, vice president, Belknap Hardware A Manufacturing Company: "Merchants throughout the country have more frocen assets In the way of notes and accounts than all thn failed hanks. If these frosen asset could be thawed out. It would be a tremendous stride towards recovery. Our President should be prevailed upon to Issue a proclamation to our people to pay their debts." N.

All 'practical' business men have as one of their main maxims, there can be no sentiment In So, why should employes have sentiment?" Frank A. Baxter: "The unwillingness of the moneyed powers to make available an 'adequate currency as promised by the President, will before very long produce a condition that cannot be controlled. The shortsighted, narrow-minded, close-fisted financier, who belittles the struggling effort of the American citizen to maintain his independence and own his home, charges him 6 to 8 per cent for a first mortgage, If be lets him have It at all, plus a fee of 3 per cent. "Let us have an "adequate currency' for all of the people." Edna Llkle: "McKinley, In ringing words, said: The money of the country should be as national as its flag, as sacred as the national honor, and as sound as the Government This Is the kind of money which it Is the paramount Interest of every citizen of this country, no matter to what political party he may he-long, to want to maintain and continue." COATS LEAD VOLUME.

The only demand of any considerable volume reported last week was in coat lines, which met with a good call from consumers, with consequent reordering from the manufacturers. The volume of reorders has made considerable inroads on manufac- turers' stocks and some of the more popular models have been reported as sold out Considerable of the demand was reported in the cloth coat lines In the popular price range which was understood to have been obtained from the producers at sharp con- 1 cessions. Concessions are expected to enable retailers to launch largs scale promotional sales in cloth coats in the retail range of 329.50 to $49.50, offering good values. JACKET DEMAND STRONGER. One of the outstanding features of last week's orders, according to numerous buying reports, Was tha increasingly popular call for Jack- ets, lapln and sealine, with I he white bunny Jacket apparently in- creasing In vogue.

The beginning of the formal season has resulted in a stronger call for this type of wrap to go with evening gowns, with the major por tion of the demand still centered id the popular price range. Among bunny Jackets the 22-inch length In the retail range of around $20 seems to be most popular, while the lapin jacket in black and colors to sell at retail from $25 to $40 reported going good.
