Wells. Mr. Burton died last night in Memorial Hospital. Born in Pittsylvania County, he was a son late Ernest and Anna Farmer Burton. Most of his life was spent in Danville, where he was employed by R.

J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, and the Warehouse. Virginia a member of Rock Springs United Methodist Church. Surviving are two brothers, James Burton, Danville, and Archie Burton, South Boston Road; and a sister, Miss Fannie Sue Burton, a resident of Kennedy House in Martinsville. The body is at Barker Funeral Home and the family is at the residence of James Burton, 217 Fagan St.

Robert Jones Rites Today Funeral services for Robert Wesley Jones, 76, of Danville Rt. 1 wers set for 2 p.m. today at Fair Funeral Home Chapel in Eden, N.C., with burial in the Jones family cemetery. Mr. Jones, died Saturday morning Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for one week.

Born in Pittsylvania County, he was a member of Harmony Methodist Church. He was a retired farmer. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Frances Clark Jones; three daughters, Mrs. Iris Benny, Cascade Rt.

1, and Mrs. Hazel Jarrell and Mrs. Gayle Booth, both of Eden, N.C.; two sons, Bobby C. Jones, Danville and N. Dillard Jones, Danville; two sisters, Miss Margorie Jones and Mrs.

T.S. Salmons, both of Cascade Rt. three brothers, Sam H. Irvin Jones and B.L. Jones, all of Cascade Rt.

11 grandchildren. Alonza Bailey Rites Yesterday Last rites for Alonza Taylor Bailey 55, owner and operator of the Purity Market on Union were held yesterday at 2 p.m. at WrennYeatts Chapel. Interment was in Highland Burial Park. Mr.

Bailey died unexpectedly Friday. He became ill at work and was pronounced dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital. A son of the late Alonza T. and Nell Hurst life in Bailey, Danville. he spent his entire He was married to the former Laura Daniel.

They resided at 220 Cambridge Drive. Mr. Bailey was a veteran of World War 11. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his step-mother, Mrs. Miriam Miller, Richmond: and a half-brother, James Bailey, Ferrum.

C.D. Simpson Rites At Church GRETNA A funeral for Caril Douglas Simpson, 55, of Gretna Rt. 4 was held yesterday at 2 p.m. at Midway Baptist Church. Burial was in the family cemetery.

Mr. Simpson died Friday in Danville Memorial Hospital of an apparent heart attack. He was born in Pittsylvania County March 8, 1920, a son of the late Chess Taylor and Maude Tuck Simpson. He was an employe of the W. A.

Blair Construction Company in Gretna and was a member of the Midway Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bessie Irby Simpson; a son, Russell Simpson, Gretna; sisters, Miss Ella Simpson, Mrs. Iza Farris, Mrs. Alice Farris and Mrs.

Minnie Dalton, all of Hurt; and three grandchildren. Funeral Today For Will Johns A funeral for Will Johns, 76, of 321 Lincoln was set for today at 1 p.m. at L.H. Brooks Bro. Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Johns died in Memorial Hospital last Thursday following a lengthy illness. Born in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late James and Lizzie Flagg Johns. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his wife, Mrs.

Edna Pyatte Johns; three children, Percy Johns and Mrs. Effie Lea, both of Woodtown, N.J., and Mrs. Willie Rogers, Ringgold; three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Simon and Mrs. Roberta Redick, both of Ringgold, and Mrs.

Lethie Simmons. Plainsville, nine grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren. Background Reported Information about Columbia Research Corp. reportedly conducting mail solicitations in the local area for vacation packages for a $15 fee has been released by Gary L. Bengston, chairman of the Better Business Committee of the Danville Chamber of Commerce.

Bengston has been informed by the Chicago Better Business Bureau that Columbia Research's president is Raymond D. Anderson, whose last business venture used a similar direct -mail solicitation sales scheme and ended in a 1974 bankruptcy filing, with 99,000 creditors and no assets. According to the report, Anderson has been connected with three additional companies, all now out of business, against which complaints had been filed with Better Business Bureaus. Pittsylvania Gains Two Candidates In anticipation of the March 2 deadline for the candidate filings for May 4 local elections in Pittsylvania County, Hurt now has three contenders for Town Council, Gretna has one for Council and one for mayor, and Chatham has one for Council. Latest two to enter races were R.

Louis Short, a former Hurt Councilman who did not seek re-election in 1974; and Richard C. Ramsey, who is bidding for re-election to a second term on Gretna's governing body. Attend VICA Contest Over 250 vocational high school students congregated at George Washington High School for district VocationalIndustrial Clubs of America (VICA) contests Saturday. GW students took half of the 92 trophies, including first place in 20 different contests. GW students took home first.

Hattie Goad, Dry Fork, Mrs. Frances Hamilton and Mrs. Dallie Garrett, both of Lynchburg, Mrs. Ocie Meredith, Martnsville, and Miss Frances Murphy, Gretna: half-brothers, Willie Murphy, Gretna, Otis Murphy, Martinsville, Roy Murphy, Newport News; four grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. Rites At Church For Miss Foster Last rites for Mrs.

Lula Foster, 69, of 1049 Gilbert were set for 3:30 p.m. today at East New Hope Baptist Church, with burial in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. Mrs. Foster died at her residence last Thursday following a lengthy illness. Born in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Ed and Nannie Bennett Foster.

A retired employe of Dibrell she was a member of East New Hope Baptist Church. Surviving are two brothers, Alvin Foster and Orlanda Foster, both of the home. Rites Wednesday For Mrs. Lease A funeral for Mrs. Viola Loutzenhiser Lease, 62, will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

at Arbaugh-Pearce Funeral Home, with burial following in Grandview Cemetery, Salem, Ohio. Mrs. Lease died Saturday in Danville Memorial Hospital after a decline in health for eight months. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of Joseph E. Loutzenhiser and the late Mary Berry Loutzenhiser.

Mrs. Lease had been a resident of Danville for six years and was employed by Hartford Insurance Company. On Dec. 25, 1938, she married Jean R. Lease, who survives.

In addition to her husband and father, she is survived by three brothers, Joseph E. Loutzenhiser Jr. and Richard G. Loutzenhiser, both of Salem, Ohio, and Donald Loutzenhiser, Evans City, and four sisters, Mrs. Mary Ellen Green, Mrs.

Ronald Hannay and Mrs. John Stoita, all of Salem, Ohio, and Mrs. Delmer Schaffer, Livonia, Mich. C.P.Yarbrough Rites At Church Last rites for Charles Yarbrough, 66. of 622 Shelton were set for today ah 3 p.m.

at North Main Baptist Church, with interment following in Highland Burial Park. Mr. Yarbrough died Saturday in Memorial Hospital after a decline in health for six weeks. Born in Forsyth County, N.C., he was a son of the late Joseph A. Yarbrough and Emma Banner Yarbrough.

He retired from Dan River Inc. in 1972. Since that time, he has worked part-time at Danville Auto Supply. In 1934. he married the former Elise Stephens, who survives.

He was a member of North Main Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five sisters, Mrs. L.S. Styers, Winston-Salem, N.C.. Mrs.

A.E. Clayton and Mrs. W.A. Jordon, both of Danville, Mrs. W.0.

Barker, N.C., and Mrs. Osborne, Burlington, N.C.; and three brothers, J. Bynum. Homer M. and Joseph A.

Yarbrough, all of WinstonSalem. R.L. Patterson Rites Saturday MARTINSVILLE Last rites for Robert Leslie Patterson. 75, were conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. at Lynch Funeral Home Chapel in Rocky Mount.

Entombment was in Roselawn Mausoleum in Martinsville. Mr. Patterson died Friday in a Rocky Mount hospital. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Hallie Price, Bramwell, W.

Mrs. Eleanor Elliott, Danville, and Mrs. Mamie Shupe, Raleigh, N.C.; three brothers, Herman Patterson and Forest Patterson, both of Martinsville, and Bruce Patterson, Freeman, W. Va. George Chattin Rites Tomorrow A funeral for George Grover Chattin, 61, of 225 W.

Thomas will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Chapel. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park. The body is at the funeral home where the family will receive friends today from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Mr.

Chattin died yesterday 8:50 p.m. in Memorial Hospital. He had been in declining health for four months and a patient in the hospital for two days. Born in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late George Lee Chattin and Martha Ann Shelton Chattin. Most of his life was spent in the Blairs community and Danville, where he was employed at Dan River Inc.

Hontas Dallas, Lynchburg; and seven grandchildren. Garnett Bennett Funeral Today RICHMOND- A funeral for Garnett Rey Bennett, 70, of Richmond was set for today at 3 p.m. at Bennett Funeral Home, with burial in a local cemetery. Mr. Bennett died Saturday at his residence after a lengthy illness.

Born in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Dr. Ruben William Bennett and Maggie Anderson Bennett. He taught at RandolphMacon Academy in Bedford. From 1930 to his retirement in 1969, he taught at Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond. Mr.

Bennett was a member of Revielle United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mozelle Powell Bennett: a sister, Mrs. Robert W. Grubb, Chatham; and a brother, Dr.

Stuart Onyx Bennett. Norfolk. Mrs. Godsey Funeral Today Last rites for Mrs. Dora Mitchell Guthrie Godsey, 86, of Dry Fork were set for 4 p.m.

today at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel in Brookneal, with burial following in Calvary United Methodist Church cemetery at Winfall. Mrs. Godsey died Saturday in a Danville nursing home. She was born in Halifax County, a daughter of the late John N. Guthrie and Rebecca Sandifer Guthrie.

Mrs. Godsey was the widow of John Henry Godsey. She was a member of Winfall Baptist Church. Mrs. Godsey is survived by four sons, Wilson Godsey, Robert Godsey and Ernest Godsey, all of Brookneal, and Pat Godsey, Lynchburg; four daughters, Mrs.

James Andrews and Mrs. Warren Ashworth, both of Danville, Mrs. Ina Lawhorne, Alexandria, and Mrs. Doris Allender, Temple City, a stepdaughter, Mrs. Lena Mayberry, Lynchburg; two brothers.

L.T. Guthrie, Durham, N.C. and J.T. Guthrie, Hampton; a sister, Mrs. Bessie Layne, Long Island; 31 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Hillerest Burial Park. The body is at Scott Funeral Home and the family is at the residence of Mrs. James R. Watlington Chatham Rt. 5.

Mrs. Riddle died yesterday in Danville Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for a day. Born in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late George Lee Shelton and Ellen Shelton. She was married to Garry Hugh Riddle, who survives, and was a member of Payneton United Methodist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs.

James R. Wattlington Chatham Rt. a son, Archer A. Riddle, Jacksonville, two sisters, Mrs. Gilmer Jefferson, Danville, and Mrs.

J. F. Whitlow, Chatham; a brother, Paul M. Shelton, Chatham; and six grandchildren. Rites Yesterday For Colia Oliver Funeral services for Colia V.

Oliver, 92, were held yesterday at 2 p.m. at his residence on Route 360. Burial was in the family cemetery. Mr. Oliver, a lifelong resident of Pittsylvania County, died Thursday night in Memorial Hospital.

Three Men Perish In Weekend Smashup North Of Roxboro ROXBORO, N.C. Three men were fatally hurt in a twocar accident early Sunday 11 miles north of Roxboro on Route 57. Killed in the triple fatality were Willie Ed Barley, 25, and Lewis Pointer both of Milton, and Carrol Dunkley, 47, of Roxboro. The North Carolina Highway Patrol reported that Barley and Pointer were passengers in a car that went out of control and struck the car which Dunkley was driving. Barley was born in Pittsylvania County, a son of Mr.

and Mrs. Thomas Barley, of Chatham Rt. 1, Va. He was a member of Shockoe Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mrs.

Shirley Mae Barley a son, Ricky Barley, Milton Rt. two sisters, Margaret and Velma Ann Barley, both of Chatham; five brothers, Lee Thomas, Awards Climax Conviction Scout Camporee Is Upheld Thirty -one Boy Scout patrols from Danville, Pittsylvania and Halifax counties participated in this weekend's Bicentennial-theme camporee at the White Oak Mountain Wildlife Management Area on Rt. 707. Lakes Hearing Set March 2 In Gretna A two-district Reservoirs Committee, created in 1971 to coordinate activities affecting Smith Mountain and Leesville lakes, will be the subject of a public hearing March 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gretna Senior High School auditorium. Airing of views the reservoir group's operation and work program is sought by an ad hoc committee from the two planning districts comlake-shore counties Bedford, Campbell, Franklin and Pittsylvania.

The Reservoir Committee functions as a subcommittee of the West Piedmont Planning District's environment committee and of the Central Virginia Planning District's regional land-use body. HUMANE SOCIETY The Danville-Pittsylvania Humane Society will meet tomorrow at 7:30 in the downtown First National Bank's Danville Room for a slide program by members of the Guilford County, N.C., humane society. GREENSBORO, N.C. The North Carolina Supreme Court has upheld the murder conviction of Michael Allen Lester, 23, who participated in undercover work that led to drug arrests in Danville, several years ago. Lester was charged with the Dec.

29, 1974 slaying of Robert Abram Walter III, 17, of Danville. After reviewing the case, the court reported that it found no error in the judgment of James M. Baley of Asheville, who convicted Lester in Guilford County Superior Court last April 11. Lester was convicted mainly on the testimony of Waller's companion, Kent D. Wells, 17.

also of Danville. Lester picked up the two while they were hitchhiking to Greensboro for a rock concert. Wells testified that Lester took them to an isolated spot off the highway. There he robbed them and made a homosexual advance on Waller. While Wells ran to get help, Lester stabbed and shot Waller.
