Big night The proijram includes the annual race between members of the Press-Radio and TV and the Ottawa Rough Vi Ski week. To most board buffs that's a familiar expression but to many that's all it is, an expression. The true implications of Ski Week remain cloaked In mystery to any who have not participated in one of them. Defined, a ski week is a winter vacation plan in which a skier, ranging from novice to expert, can participate with accommodation, meals, instruction and lift tickets all included in the price. Numerous areas in the U.S.

and Canada, particularly in the Laurentians, provide just such a winter playground program. John Clifford envisions the growth of Mont Ste. Marie into such a resort area in the Gatineau. Gray Rocks Inn near St Jovite in the Laurentians is one area in which the ski week is a vital part of the winter program. The majority of those involved are from south of the border although some Canadians from regions somewhat removed from the Laurentians do avail themselves of the program.

A normal ski week attracts about 350 persons. They arrive, many with considerable trepidation, about noon hour Sunday and that evening engage in a get-acquainted party. Monday morning they are divided into groups of 10-12 depending on their skiing knowledge and ability and placed under supervision of an instructor. For the balance of the week, that particular instructor serves as a virtual mother hen for his class, teaching them how to ski and generally making their ski week a memorable one.

Friday is party night and, following a final Saturday slope session, the participants return to regular home life pursuits. Wonderful job "These instructors do a wonderful job," Ken Leder, a New Yorker attending his second ski week told me, "they make you work at it but you leave with a deep appreciation of the sport and its intricacies." "For a beginner," added Thebe Bernstein, also of New York City, "like me. the whole program is wonderful. They practically spoon feed you. You may not be the most accomplished skier at the end of the week but you can at least get down a hill with confidence." Instructor Ken Prant, himself a newcomer to the Laurentian scene, explains the instructor's role thusly: "We try to make them feel more at home on skis.

Generally those who are part, of a ski week are here for two things the skiing and the sociability. As instructors we are responsible for the skiing but generally leave the sociability aspect to them. There's no problem finding lots to do." Proof positive that these programs appeal greatly to the participants is the fact that many return two or three times annually. Costs for these winter wonderland vacations vary depending on where one goes and what is involved but usually anyone planning such a junket can budget an entertaining week for from $100 $200.
