When a sniper's bullet blinded Edwin Albert Baker in 1915, a new era dawned for sightless people the world over.

Returning to Canda, Baker obtained a job with Ontario Hydro, and married the daughter of "Black Jack" Robinson, fighting editor of the Toronto Telegram steps which convinced his family that he was not a helpless invalid. Baker's contact with other blind veterans, and sighted people who wanted to help, led to the incorporation in 1918 of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. This was the beginning of a fantastic career, and a record of achievement beyond the reach of most able bodied people. The Kingston Centennial ceremonies honoring Sir John A. MacDonald was the setting for the interview with Colonel Baker.

The Ernie Game, a 90-minute color feature film about a man who tries to make everybody play the game of life according to his rules, will be co produced by the National Film Board and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The Ernie Game is the second feature film co production to be announced by the NFB and CBC in a Centennial Year program which got underway earlier this month when shooting began in Quebec City on the feature film Waiting For Caroline. Both films are scheduled for first screening on the CBC-TV network program series Festival, and for theatrical distribution. Don Owen, 33 year old native of Toronto who has resided in Montreal for the past six years, is director of The Ernie Game, while another Canadian, 25 year-old Alexis Kanner, will play the lead role. Playing opposite Mr.

Kanner will be Montreal actress Judith Gault. Owen won widespread critical acclaim, particularly in New York and in Europe, for his direction of the National Film Board production Nobody Waved Goodbye. He was the co-winner, also, of the Grand Prix for middle length films at the 1966 Montreal International Film Festival. Dr. Susan Calvin, robopsychologist, is about to retire from Unit- tion of the NFB production Notes For a Film on Donna and Gail. Another NFB film directed by him, High Steel, currently is in distribution through theatres in Canada and abroad.

In addition to directing The Ernie Game, Mr. Owen is also the writer of the screenplay. It is based on original material written by Bernard Cole Spencer. Although only 25 years of age, Kanner has an impressive list of credits which includes leading roles at Stratford, Ontario, Festival; a lengthy association with the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Birmingham, England; appearances with Orson Welles in Dublin and Belfast; and extensive work in London, both on stage and in television. Gordon Burwash, regional production representative for the National Film Board in Toronto, will be producer of The Ernie Game.

Director of photography will be Jean-Claude Labrecque of Montreal. Director Owen describes The Ernie Game as a film about a man who tries to make everybody play the game of life according to his rules. "The film is many things a comedy, a 1 story, a reflection of many people," Owen says. "Ernie's career often is laughably inconsistent with what is considered true or reasonable, yet the story is touching and meaningful." "Ernie hands it out and takes it," summarizes the film's star, Alexis Kanner. He should know, because Ernie will appear in every scene in the film.

"I've never played a part where I was on stage or on camera all the time," Kanner said. "In fact I don't think I know any other part which has ever called for such total involvement of an actor. I'm looking forward to it and I'm grateful for the chance to play Ernie's role," the young actor said.
