JUNE 23, 1929 CC SAN JOSE HIT BY FIRE RUSH: $75.000 LOST Wind Fanned Flames Destroy Two Buildings and Smaller Structures; Two Are Injured SAN JOSE, June by a stiff south wind, the most spectacular fire to break out in San Jose for more than a year this afternoon destroyed two buildings and several smaller structures. Damage was estimated at $75,000. The fire originated in the office of the Well Made Tire Company on the second floor of the Lehman Building at West Santa Clara and Autumn streets. The building, a two story wooden structure, was rapidly enveloped in flames, which spread to the Maurer Building.

While all available fire apparatus was called out, the blaze entirely destroyed the two buildings, then to the dry, brush filled bed leaned, Gatos Creek, and crossed the street to the $60,000 Hubbard Carmichael lumber yard. A shingle shed in the lumber yard was reduced to ashes, but the firemen prevented the blaze from sweeping the entire lot. Veteran Editor, Wilkinson Dead WASHINGTON, June Universal Service -Edwin Harmon Wilkinson, Sunday editor of the Washington Herald, engaged in newspaper work for 45 years, died from heart disease today at his home here. His death was discovered by 1 his wife, Hope Wilkinson, when she attempted to awake him early today. He apparently had died in his sleep.

Wilkinson was born in Norwalk, Ohio, 67 years ago. When he was he began a distinguished newspaper career which led to 25 years of service with the Hearst organization. He is second vice president of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Arraignment of Suspects Delayed Arraignment of Lloyd Sampsel, alias L.

V. Summers, and Ethan A. McNab, indicted for robbery Friday by the Alameda County Grand Jury, was postponed yesterday by Superior Judge Fred V. Wood at the request of ex- Senator Frank Carr, who appeared the accused men in place of Attorney Hugh K. McKevitt, who was obliged to be out of town yesterday morning.

Senator Carr asked that the arraignment be set for tomorrow, 9 in order to give him time to study the indictments. Both alleged bandits are specifically charged with holding up the Berkeley branch of the Bank of America on June 14 and stealing $17,900. All but $3,084.11 of this amount has been recovered, Berkeley police said. Vincent St. John, I.

W. W. Aide, Dies Death has closed the career of Vincent St. John, former noted labor leader who lived here in obscurity the last few years. He died at a local hospital after a prolonged illness.

St. John and "Big Bill" Haywood were active in founding the Industrial Workers of the World in Chicago in 1905. He was prominent in strikes of metal miners in Colorado, Montana and Idaho, and was one of many arrested In war time on accusations of sedition and sabotage. He served a term in Leavenworth prison, following conviction. Following his release he made his home in California, but was little heard of since.
