OP WORLDS Doughboys From Camp Lewis en Route Overland; Marines Off Yesterday Afternoon for Big Game at Pasadena BY JACK JAMES THE invasion of Pasadena by the military football hordes is under way. The United States marines of Mare Island embarked yesterday afternoon for the southern 'seaport." The doughboya from Camp Lewis are now en route overland.

To-day and to-morrow the peaceful hamlet of Pasadena will take on a military atmosphere which will not be dispelled until after the annual New Year's day gridiron classic of the West, to be staged this year by the 91st division eleven of Camp Lewis and the United States marines of Mare Island. "We are ready. Bring on the enemy!" was the spirit of the national army eleven as it entrained Friday night at Tacoma. Just previous to their entrainment a monster rally was held in the Y. M.

But they do say that the recent love-fest in the City of' Angels was simply the oil of hope smoothing the troubled waters of doubt, and that nobody got a dislocated elbow patting himself on the back. For instance, the furrows of care seem to be somewhat deep upon the brow of Tom Darmody.

home nobody seemed to know anything about it. Tho only time they drew anybody except those who were paid to attend was when they were competing with the Angels, and that was never much in the way of competition. Several members of the directorate have privately expressed the opinion lhat Los Anpeles is doing its share if it supports one team properly, and lhat the lcapuc would be better off if the franchise was transferred to another city. fib tttfi fife 3 rjo But right there comes the rub. The other city isn't to be located so easily, lien Berry has suggested Fresno, and yet It was only three or four years ago that Hen lost a nice little piece of money backing a Class club at Fresno.

Still, with the proper sort of bucking, a team at Fresno might contribute its share. It would do well enough on the road, and it certainly could not do much worse in any way, either baseballically or financially, than Vernon did last season. Th only other city suggested is San Diego. And this suggestion has a certain amount of backing, indicating that the citizens of the border town are in earnest, while those of Frfsno are content to wait. The Penn team was taken from the hotel to Pasadena last New Year's on a special car, the same car and driven and. directed by the same motorman and conductor that bore the Brown warriors to a licking the previous year. afternoon it bore eighteen husky football players, seventy-five assorted and talented musicians, and various and sundry attaches such as coaches, first aid corps and ct ceteras, the whole constituting the advance party of Marines sent from their home station at Mare Island to capture Pasadena. Lieutenant Newton Best, post athletic officer, is in command. In spite of their successful season, the Marines arc not over-confident.

In baseball you sometimes have to wait for seven months team has developed a lot of new and dangerous stuff during the past month, and that the team that will trot onto the turf on New Year's Day will be Immeasurably superior to that outfit trimmed by the 'Marines nt Tacoma not so Ions: agone. The Marine squad Is composed of the following: Beckett, tackle; Itidder-hoff, guard; Mitchell, and D. Furthermore, Bill's showing of the past season tended to indicate that as a player he would not be such a tremendous asset.

And then he would have to be purchased, and Judge SANTA CLAUS Btepped out on the tennis courts at Golden Gate Park yesterday and spoiled all the fun for a gathering of enthusiasts who had anticipated much pleasure In witnessing the final matches In the Women's Club class singles tournament. Old Santa did not actually step out In per-don, but he was the responsible party, Just the same. Miss Helen Baker was scheduled to play Miss Anita Myera for the championship and Mrs. Jack Mar-lsch was to meet Mlas Ursula Dietrich for the honors In the third class. A conference between Miller Hugglns, manager of the New York American League baseball club, and Business Manager Qulnn of the St, Louis Americans, over the transfer of Second Baseman Pratt of the Browns to the Yankees was without result. While expressing fcreat admiration for the Marines, Klawans believes that Stanton's wide football knowledge will stand the Camp Lewis men In mighty good stead, and expects that the Marines will have to play harder and better football than ever before thn race is settled. Atkin couldn't stand, it. But, as a matter of fact, the game bus never lost Its fascination for him, and he wouldn't mind taking another whirl at it.

During his visit to Angeles he made the statement that he would be willing to back a Coast League club In San Diego, either by taking over one of the franchises of the present organization or by assuming a new franchise if the league was expanded to eight clubs. Interest in baseball will have a real revival about the middle of next month. The mugmitps will start sending out their contracts and the managers will start the gathering in of players to fill the vacant places created by the army draft and the big league recalls and purchases.
