P. Railroad Fixes Special Prico Round Trip South Next.Friday, So successful was the recent sale of tickets at $10 for the round trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco that the Southern Pacific Is to make a similar round-trip rate from this city to Los Angeles. The day the tickets were on sale in the southern metropolis 1,475 were sold. They were good for fifteen days and had to be used via the coast line. The tickets from this city will be on sale next Friday and only on that day.

They, too, will be good for fifteen days and must be used over the coast line. The regular rate for a continuous trip between the two cities is $14 each way. For a round trip, with stopover privileges, the regular rate Is J30.5O. The $10 rate Is therefore a cut of over a third of the latter regular tariff. As the distance each way ia 411 miles, the reduced rate Is almost a cent A mile for the round trip.

It is understood the business oora-munltles of the two cities favor thee low rates ss a means of bringing tho two cities into closer contact than over, and that Lovett, Stubba and McOot-mlck of the Southern PaclEa havo about decided upon a policy of making; thla reduction three or four tlmea year. The question whether 61 per cent of the property owners of an assessment district In which a proposed tunnel Is to be constructed shall have the right to file a protest and hold up the work for the purpose of extending the assessment district was the principal matter discussed last night at a special meeting of the street committee of the Board of Supervisors.

Representatives from several improvement and tunnel associations were present to discuss the proposed ordinance providing for tunnel construction and the assessments of the costs and damages upon the private property benefited. They were requested to put their objections in writing and submit them to the street committee, to be considered at a meeting to bo set later. Object to Definition. C. F.

Adams, appearing for the Twin Peaks Tunnel and Improvement Convention, objected at the start to the definition given to the word "tunnel" in the ordinance. He contended that there was too much restriction In the term as given, and In the event the ordinance was passed as drawn, it would be impossible to construct a subway without the passage of an express ordinance. Theodore Savage, Dr. Hartland Law and George Kkaller, in the Interest of The Spring Valley Water Company baa raised the price of lta property to $48,000,000. Arlt, who lives at 123 Oak street, saved Miss Alice Gross from drowning in the Russian river a after she had dragged under water another man who had tried to rescue her. Arlt, who is employed in the accounting department of the Paclfla Telephone Company, went down to the river bank after packing his trunks preparatory to leaving the camp on Saturday. He was strolling leisurely in his traveling clothes awaiting train time, when his attention was attraoted by the screams of a woman, who was pointing frantlcly at the water.

Arlt rushed close to the brink of the stream and learned from the woman that her daughter had Just fallen overboard from a rowboat. Two boys in another boat were rowing for the girl, who waa making an unsuccessful attempt to keep afloat in tho rushing stream. Before they succeeded in reaching her, George Robinson, one of the campers, dove and caught the girl, who in her fright gripped him about the arms and rendered him helpless. Unable to relieve the clutch in whioh she had him entwined, Robinson disappeared with the girl beneath the water. When he saw them sink, Arlt, who Is a strong swimmer, Jumped into the water without taking time to remove even his shoes.

In a few vigorous strokes he reached the spot whore they sank and, when they appeared again, grabbed the ettll struggling girl and made her release her hold on the man. Shouting to Robinson to look out for himself, Arlt succeeded in quieting Miss Gress and swimming with her to shore, i Whert the girl was dragged ashore she was unconscious, and it took mora than a half hour to resuscitate her. Robinson swam to shore without diffi up Professor MoAdle of the united States weather bureau and aak him United States Circuit Court to hay the olty and county of San Franolsoo of when he was called down to answer what his assistants thought was a very pressing call on the telephone. Judge Van Fleet obtained all the papers in the new suit as soon as they were filed yesterday, but it is generally understood that he will not take any action in the case for several days. The complaint of the Spring Valley Water Company covers over forty pages and delves into the history of the company from Its founding. The most important affidavit is the one worn to by F.

The price of the property at that time waa $36,000,000, and Mayor Taylor engaged In conversation with Anderson and asked him why it was that the company had advanced the price of the property from $33,000,000, which was the price offered to the city In the Captain Payson regime, up to $35,000,000.
