Arnott Last weekend brought "Children's weather" to the Capital and all across the r-City, and in the country, too, the young of heart took full advantage of it. There was an overnight fall of soft snow, the "rotting snow" that usually comes in March, that eats into the underlying snow layers and prepares it for the disintegration that the spring months bring. It being the weekend, most people slept in, there being no rush to get to down-town offices and other places of employment.

K-R2 White resigns What snow fights there were, the mimic battles the youngsters delight in and if, now and then, there were impacts on tender spots that brought wails of anguish and indignation it was all done in the best and highest of spirits. Later, after the coffee and toast, the fathers and mothers got out and little snowballs became big ones as fathers and their progeny rolled mammoth balls to create snowmen.

On my street there was a full dozen of them up in back yards in less time than it takes to tell of it. Fathers and youngsters puffed mightily in preparing the biggest snowballs ever for the foundations of the snow men to be created. It takes three to make a snow man, a "big un," a medium sized one, and a smaller one for the head. But after that comes the artistry. And, of course, there was a multiplicity of hats taken from attics and basements to finish out the ensemble. However, there were distinctive touches, and this is where the older members of the family had full scope. There were quite a few where kitchen knives were used to actually carve out very realistic snow men and there were some very fine examples of snow statuary that were tributes to adult artistry and skill. Of course there were snowforts, too. Some crudely constructed bearing witness to the juvenile builders but there were others where the blocks were carefully carved, where there were battlements and towers, and while small, they rivalled the much larger, much more expensive, ice palace built on the market square as the focal point for the winter carnival in progress.

But the important thing was the laughter, the joyous exuberant peals that went skyward from young throats and spoke of the happiness mat is the gift, the inalienable right, of. children wherever they are found. It was the kind of laughter, the outright glee, the spontaneous merriment that brings a glow to older hearts that makes parents and grandfathers akin with their children and makes the world despite its problems, a very lovely place to inhabit.
