In conjunction with this all-talking drama, "Plumes" will be seen on the stage, with Don Smith and Jackie Brunea starring. This is an elaborately planned revue. In the "Madonna of Avenue GEARY Tonight TWO WEEKS ONLY I NEW Y0RKS COMEDY SENSATION Grant Withers and Louise Dresser have supporting roles. The picture was directed for Warner Brothers by Michael Curtis, who won fame in It Isn't "Marie Marlon" that the lady of that name la known to vaudeville fans In all directions, but as "the girl with the funny little red hat." Miss Marion and her hat and her partner. Nelson Clifford, who come to the Orpheum today, broke into fame together.

The Orpheum this week will present Clarence Coleman, San Francisco businessman, who is Prof. Herman SchnlUel, famous radio comic. He will give a burlesque broadcast of the "feetsball game between Clnclnopolis and Other Orpheum attractions Include the Mascagno Four in "Dances Cardini, the card king; the Norman Thomas quintet. mMWHtMMHMinMMIMHMMMMMffnMI I- MP' directing "Noahs Ark." Night Club life, drinking, dan Ina Claire, star of "The Awful Truth," which opens at the Golden Gate today, won her first recognition from David Belasto, who later became her mentor, by burlesquing one of his current plays in the Ziegfeld Follies. She was singing a parody of "Marle-Odile," and her gift of satire made her one of the biggest hits lrt the show.

Seeing Indications of finer talent than musical comedy offered, Belasco made her a star In "Polly With a Past." and followed this with "The Gold Diggers," "Grounds for Divorce," "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife" and "The Last of Mrs, Cheyney." Henry Daniels, former'- leading man for Ethel Barrymore, heads the supporting cast with Miss Claire, while others are Paul Harvey, who played In the original New York stage cast; John Roche, Blanche Frederlci and Theodore Von Elte. Earle Wallace, who has been praised as an adagio dancer, will head the vaudeville portion of the bill with his adagio quintet. Wallace says he is on the lookout for new dancing talent and to this end will be glad to Interview today any girl with terpsichorean ambitions. One of the requirements Is that she must weight less than 110 pounds. Other acts on the program Include Newhoff and Phelps.

Withers as Slim, a rum-runner falls In love with Marie (Dolores GREGORY In "The Love Doctor," which opens today at the St, Francis, Richard Dix plays a role similar to the one he essayed in "Nothing But the Truth." Business with "The Love Doctor" was In a bad way until he started giving authentic advice on how to capture and hold some one you loved. Of course, no love story is complete without a beautiful girl, and "the love doctor," among many others, has as his nurse, June Collyer, and for the troublesome blonde, Miriam Seegar.

"The Lunkhead," an all-talking comedy, and Larle De Pries' synco-paters are Included on the new program. Alexandria Books Talking 'Kits' for Screen Several of the season's most successful talking pictured have been acquired for Immediate showing on the new weekly program policy at the Alexandria Theater, Geary street at Eighteenth avenue. Following the Four Marx Brothers in "The Cocoanuts," current at the Alexandria, Idle Rich" will be shown for one entire, week. This picture is the talking film version of hite Collars" and will open Wednesday. Edna Ferber's musical comedy success.

"Show Boat," will hold the Alexandria screen for the following week, Diggers of Broadway," a Warner Brothers technicolor, talking, singing and dancing extravaganza, at the Embassy, WHO'S WHO: Nancy Welford. Winnie Llghtner, Conway Tearle, Ann Pennington, Nick Lucas, Lilyan Tashman, Albert Gran, Neely Edwards and a lot of others making whoope' ider the direction of Roy del Ruth. WHAT IT'S ALL, ABOUT: Remember "On With the ShowT" We rather liked that, didnf we? Pic-torially and atmospherically, this Is somewhat similar. It assays high In decorative anatomy, the patter of dancing feet, the tinkle of Kick Lucas guitar (and almost too much of his singing), the popping of champagne, bottles and colored balloons, and Winnie Lightner's strident voice. The story relates how Conway Tearle as a $100,000, 000 uncle of the Juvenile, and Albert Gran as uncle's massive attorney, set out to tear nephew away from his chorus girl sweetheart, and how they get tangled in the meshes of a couple other butterflies.

THE EDUCATIONAL VALUES: One's suspicions of the wily chorus girl are again confirmed. One learns again that a gold digger Is she who digs shallowly but profitably; who goes beyond her reputed territory by disdaining mere gold, and continuing to dig until and Lincoln strata. One learns also that brash young chorines are really ladies under the skin, that they have gray-haired, kindly mothers as well as daddies that they sometimes hail from the puritanical precincts of Boston, and that after J1 their ro-de-do-do-do they settle down to old-fashioned home life, carpet slippers and kiddies. Finally, one learns that the Warners haven't yet considered it necessary to hire dialogue writers. VERDICT: "Gold Diggers of Broadway" lacks the human quality that "On With the Show" had, and the acting is stilted, except for that of Albert Gran, Lilyan Tashman and Conway Tearle.

Miss Llghtner, who with Nick Lucas gets most of the footage, falls to attain the vulgarian perfection of a Trlxia Prigansa, though some of her scenes with the capable Mr. Gran are quite amusing chiefly due to him. Popular melodies are dished up with prodigal hand; there is beautiful staging and costuming, and the picture keeps moving. With which, the case Is submitted. Two short subjects on the program are both very good of their kind.

In one a man Imitates everything from a horn-blowing argument between a Ford and a Rolls, to a five-piece Jazs orchestra. The other, called. I believe, "Lamb Chops," has more originality crammed Into a couple reels than the feature in an hour and forty minutes. RATOFF Costello), who reform hun.
