They Treat Each Other to Good Dose of the Locmu rspectal to the Eiahines. I New York, January 13. The powdsred and painted promenaders on Bleecker street were entertained at 10:30 o'clock by a slogging match between two uniformed policemen Joseph P. Maguire of the Mulberry-street Station aud John Irving of the Mercer-street Station. Irving patrols the north side of Bleecker street and Maguire tbe south side.

Two women whom Irving frequently met on his beat were talking with nim (against the rules) in front of Ma 3 Bieecktr street, just off the Bowery. Maguire got two roundsmen to go over and make fun of Irving and his flirtation. Irving threatened to lock theiu up. Hard words passed across the street between the policemen and Maguire walked off his beat across the street ami said to Irving with an oath: "I've got enough of you." "You go back on your post, Irving answered. Then the fun began.

Maguire struck Irving on thi month with his hst, cutting his under lip. The two women ran away, but many others gathered around and looked on. They generally do the fighting thereabouts themselves. lrviug drew his club aud brought it down on Magu ire's head. Maguire caugut Irving by the throat, and forced him ou his oack against an iron railing.

Both men kicked and used their fists and clubs as well as they could at such, close quarters. Four policemen from adjoining posts came to the scene of the fight, and tr ed to separate the sloggers. Tbey baa to do this twice, omitting to use tbe violence they would have used on 'ordinary eitizens. During the row Irving used his stick with much recklessness, striking several young men wno were trying to act as peacemakers. Inspector Cunlin and Sergeant Keileher, on duty at headquarters, became aware of the fight through the kindness of two young fellows who rushed into the corridor and shouted "Two cops around in Bleecker street are beating each other." Sergeant Keileher went around, but the battle was theu over.

Both men made statements for Inspector Conlin. Maguire said he was standing on the south side of Bleecker street and Irving and his -friends on the other side came over and accused him (Maguire) of insulting them. Then Irving slashed Maguire in the face. Un fortunately for Maguire all tbe blood spilled was iouna on me norxn siae oi me street Both men were sent back to tbeir station-houses under suspension, and with orders to report to Captain Murray. NEWHALL'S SONS A Auctioneers. THE GOLD SNAP. San Francisco Gets tHe Tail-End of a WGStsrn Biizzari COLDEST "WEATHER. 1 Eope Thai Boreas Will Tiiaw Cat and Erina Warm Weather To-Day. The sudden contraction of the storm which, cn Thursday afternoon, struck Western British Columbia and swept over Washington Territory on the night of thj same day, left its traces in Ban Francisco on Friday a.ternooa.

The citizen wbo early in the day looked out at tbe bright sunBhine, discarded his heavy black overcoat and put on one of light color, was sorry for it when tbe cold norther hit him hard in the afternoon. He supposed in tbe morning, and all the indications, including the weather reports and a rising thermometer, indicated a modera ion of the weather. At 3 o'clock on Friday afternoon, the weather probabilities had gone to the dogs, for the thermometer dropped, without, the slightest notification, three degrees, and at 5 o'clock marked 41 degrees. At 7 p. m.

it stood 40. The street cars were crowded at that hour with women, tut the healthy and cool-headed individual trudged to his home on foot to keep the circulation active. At 8 o'clock the thermometer had gone a little lower and the wind was fiercer, chilling and penetrating to the marrow. It was typical Eastern weather, and no one whose business did not call him abroad stirred from his eosy fireside. THK COLDEST WEATHER KNOWN.

From 9 o'clock until davlight yesterday the weather was the coldest known in the history or Call ornia. At 4 o'clock vesterday mornius the thermometer marked 32 decrees and at 7 o'clock it fell to 2d, tne lowest known in the memory of the oldest innab tant. This is what the thermometer in the Signal Service Station in tbe Men-hanta' Exchange at that hour recorded, but at the foot of Bernal Hights and on the exposed Pacific Hights it went trom 2 to 3 degrees lower. In the suburban places old Boreas lowered his record. At Tamabwis Station he shoved down the mercury at 7 o'clo-k to 15 deprt-ee, and around the Berkeley hills, from which tbe snow has jnst disappeared, he tried his best to make it a draw between the two points by marking the bulb a iraction above that figure.

In Santa Clara and at tne base of the foothills on the east side of the Coast Range in San Mateo the weather was tbe coldest ever known in those counties. The San Jose thermometer early yesterday morning pulled its head in at 27, and Sacramento, not to be outdone in a coid weather boom, marked one peg lower, and "points with pride" to 2b' degrees. IN THE CITY. In a number of places in the city the connections between the main and supply pipes of spring Valiey were broken off by the contraction of the supply pipes. This invariably occurred at the caps leading into the houses.

In many parts of the city, and particularly In depressed localities, ice from one to three inches thick was formed. Although at the office of the Spring Valley Water Works it was stated that tne cold had not broken mure than half adozen pipe-connections, the fact that three repair-wagons stood in front was mutely loquent of the fact that the damase was far greater than Che officers cared to state. THE MILK EN GIVEN AWAY. The class which suffered most by the phenomenally cold weather of Friday night was the milkmen whose rounds commence from 11 to 2 o'clock. Inquiry at their headquarters at the "milk rancn" on Eddy str.et, near Mason, and at Mission aud Third streets, developed tbe fact that in numerous instances the milk in the cans was frozen, and In consequence tbe morning lacteal was hot served with Its customary promptitude.

The frozen milk proved anothercold fact the Sredominance of Spring Valley in it Milk oe not fretza at the water point, 32 degrees, pn account of its constituent elements, and that fact nexr. month when the Board of Supervisors will be called upon to fix Witter rates, may lead fO a revision of tne schedule for milkmen aniens they are supplied by wells. HOPE FOB THE SHIVERING. Lieutenant Maxwell, who is in charge of the Signal Set v.ce for tbe Pacific Coast, explained by hia numerous charts to an Examiner reporter yesterday aiternoon, the appearance. Intensity, cause and probable duration of the cold wave.

He sai.l thut on riday night the Aiud blew twenty-four miles an hour, and at one time early yesterday morn.ng the anemometer measured thirty-five miles. The a rection of the wind on Friday night was northeast, but yesterday it changed to southwest "The storm struck British Columbia on Thursday night, and early the next dav centered on Washington Territory, and thence moved rnpidly southeast an gave us the cold rind, spreading with more intensity over Idaho, Pnkot and the neighboring territory. The last have heard of the coid wave (examining the fbHrts) is that it is goingover New Mexico, and then, if I mistake not the usual course of these northers, it will treud to the Atlantic States and titlier expand and lose its force, or suddenly contract and play havoo In its circumscribed course as it goes along. The wave I think will temnin all night and until to-morrow (Suuday), Mid by 10 o'clock I expect a clearing up and ont I other words I believe there trill be a marked rise in the thermometer after 10 o'clock Suuday." ZERO ZEPHYRS. Not a few people on Market street complained beiug unable to draw water from their lau-tets owing to the ice in the pipes, especially (hose whose supply tanks are exposed to the treather.

Many water-pipes were frozen on Rincon Hill. The residents In tbe northern part of the citv, specially those living on the hills most exposed to the winds, experienced much annov-ince. The wirer in hundreds of feet of pipes ir as frozen solid, and considerable difficulty was exper.enced in thawing out the pipes. 1 he upply-tanks in many rases are situated on the (ops of the houses. The pipes lending from Ibese, with hardly au exception, were frozen.

Superintendent Keating of the Almsnouse stated that on the surface of water left in exposed places at tbe house be found ice early in the morning two inches in thickness. UNBELIEF IN SUPERSTITION. (The Annual Dinner Given by the Members of a Thirteen CI ub Special to the Examikkb. New York, Junuary 13 The Thirteen Club rave one of its unique dinners to-night a the 2afe Morelll, only it was a bit more unlquee than usual, for it was the occasion of its an-iurI election. Six long tables, each holding thirteen guests, Slled the dlnlng-hali Thirteen wax tapers burned on each table.
