As an instance see "The Big Parade," Metro Goldwyn Mayer's brilliant and spectacular romance of the war. "The Big Parade," which opened at the California yesterday, was a talisman, for those concerned in its making. Karl Dane, an obscure "stunt man," was launched to fame overnight, and Tom O'Brien, who had been playing small "bits," played "Bull" in the picture and since then has occupied an Important place as a character man on the screen. Renee Adoree was a leading woman, "The Big Tarade" made her world famous and made her a favorite. John Gilbert was a star when he played the soldier hero in the picture but it gave his vogue such an impetus that he emerged from it one of the greatest box of ifce names in history.

Followed his greatest triumphs, "La Boheme," "Flesh and the Devil" and others Jack Mulhall and Dorothy Mac-kaill are together again in "Smile, Brother, Smile," whlrh comes to the Granada today. "Subway Sadie," with Its unpretentious title and practically no ballyhooing when it played on Market street some weeks ago, presented this pair so acceptably that the picture proved one of the most popular of the year. "Smile. Brother, Smile" Is the story of a wisecracking traveling salesman who carries such a strong line that he "sells" himself to a tank-town beauty, played by Dorothy M.ickalll. Frank Jenlcs.

For more than a year it has been running in New York, playing to huge crowds at road show prices.

The secret of its success, Vidor, its director, believes. Is in its human element. Its battles and other war detail are all incidental, backgrounds as it were, to the main story of the love of a bdy and a girl, the boy being the hero of the hundreds of French girls overseas.
