THE DAILY EXAMINER. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. 1VIIITK MOTJXTAI.V MIK1NCJ DISTRICT. Hiqh-Toned Robbkrs. A man by the name SPECIAL NOTICES.

NOTICES. AUCTIONEERS. Mat Dat Excubsion of Prauo Schools. Yesterday the pupils of the public schools of this city accompanied by their parents, teachers, ftiends and a large number of outsiders, went to the People's Park at San Mateo to enjoy their May day picnic. The weather wai unseasonably cold, and the tVy was covered with a gloomy curtain of clouds, which at one time threatened rain, but neither weather nor temperature were permitted to damp the spirits of the excursionists, who went out prepared to enjoy everything, and did it, The arrangements made by the Superintendent of the San Jose Railroad wtre aU that could be desired, and as the trains, crowded with passengers, moved off from the depot, their places were supplied by others, which iu their turn were as quickly filled Probably some thousands of persons traveled over the line during the course of the day, but the People's Park awaUowel them all up, and oou have held almost as many more.

P.cnic baskets were at a premium, that is, the fult ones. Those which had been emptied did not attract much attention. There was to have been a May Quesn, but owing to the inability of the committee appointed as umpires of beauty, to condense their first selection of competitors, numbering some five hundred, the arrangement fell through. On the who'e perhaps, it was as well so, since, in the immortal language of the philosopher Partingconius; capar-isons are odorous," and the elevation cf one bloom-ing Houri above her companions might have had as calamitous effects as the pr jection of the apple of Discord into the assembled powers of O'ympus. As it was, envy had no place in the People's Park yesterday, but the little folks spread themselves in every direction, And shouted as they ran Turning to mirth All things ot eartb.

As only Childhood can." The consumption of fresh air, chicken pies, tarts, kisses, seductive beverages, affection, candy and tobacco, Wds something astonishing. The day passed over in the exercise of those quiet pleasures which eave no feverish trace upon the mind of the participant, but enly a soothing reminiscence of thorough and Platonic enjoyment. The only hitch which occurred was on the way back, when a number of rowdies got into one of the cars, which was filled with women and children, and exercised their brutal propensities by stealing the remains of the provender, and frightening and insulting the ladles by then- disgusting language. Two of them were finally arrested and then things grew quiet again. But altogether the day was, so far as the Public Schools are conoerned, a very pleasant and satisfactory one.

Thb Academy or Music. In compliance with the unanimous request of the press and the public, the management of this theatre have decided to Lost in London on the stage for a few nights longer. It continues to draw good houses, and would do so we believe, if it were continued another week. On Friday night Mrs. O.

li. Saunders will take a farewell benefit most decidedly mot in compliance with the desire of the press or the public The benefit, by all means, if the wants it; the farewell not at any price. We are surprised to find tht Mrs. Saunders can have the heart to leave her old friends iu this cold-blooded manner, but if she will go, why, she must not be allowed to catch cold on Friday i ight by. playing to a thin house.

AmnvsESABY Excubsion. Next Sunday, May 6th, the Irish American Benevolent Society will celebrate their seventh anniversary by an excursion to San Quentin. The steamer Contra Costa has been chartered for the occasion, and as she has been enlarged and newly fitted up the disciples of the light-fan tastic will have an opporttmUy of disporting themselves on board. She will steam all round the Bay, pas ring close to the forts, and through Raccoon Straits. Those who remember the complete style in which this society have always organized and car ried out their annual excursions, will feel every confidence in the promise of a pleasant day, which the arrangements hold forth.

Niw Homestead Association. The certificate of incorporation of the Excelsior Homestead Associa tion, was yesterday filed in the office of the Clerk of the County Court. The opening of the Front street. Mission and Ocean Railroad took place yes terday. A number of ladies and gentlemen assembled by invitation at half past two, at the intersec tion of Sansome and Market streets, from which point the cars started. Ihe new cars, whioh are very handsomely constructed, were speedily filled, and the first trip was taken amidst universal on- gratulations. The cost of this line is between 000 and and its importance to property hold ers in, the suburban districts through which it runs.

is very great. Tbi Cosmopolitan Cibctjs. The talented circus troupe concentrated under the management of Mes srs. Lee Byland, will give the first performance ia the circus on Jackson street, to-monow evening. The names of the Buislays alone, are a sufficient guarantee for a first-class entertainment, and when to these attractions are added the Lue and Siegrist families the public must be satisfied that Mr.

Alex ander has catered for them well and carefully. Silver Minin Com pant. The Neagle Corcoran Silver Mining Company yetterday filed their certifi cate of incorporation in the oiLce of the Clerk of the County Court. The Company is organized to work a cinnabar lode in fctorey county, Kevada- The capital stock is $200,000, In two thousand shares of $100 each. William Neagle, Isaac Davis, Wo.

Corcoran and Daniel Murphy are appointed trustees. The Metropolitan No per'otmasce took place at this theatre last night owing to pecuniary difficul ties. In a few days it will be re-opened with a full company, under tne management or Mrs. Medley Brown. The Mountain Sylph is announced the opening piece.

The Round Table in the course of a severe criticism on what it regards as the weakness and bad taste of Bancroft's oration, remarks that the entire introduction is a reminiscence from Burke, and gives an example The following is a well-known naesasre from Burke If a great change is to be maae in numan attairs, the minds of men will be fitted to it the general opinions and feelings will draw that way. Every fear, every hope, will forward it and then they who persist in opposing this mighty current in numan anairs will appear rather to resist the decrees of Providence itself than the mere designs of man." Bancroft's expression of the same idea is When the hour strikes for a people or for mankind to pass into a new form of being, unseen hands draw the bolts from the gates of futurity; an all-subduing influence prepares the minds of men for the coming revolution those who plan i i i fi i 1 1 if bistauue uuu uiemseives in counici wun me will of Providence rather than with human devices." Grasshoppers. Last Sunday, April 22d, says the Santa Cruz Sentinel, while on an ex cursion six miles north of Santa Cruz, near the Petroleum Oil Works, we observed mil lions of these insects, (Gryllua, common grasshoppers) almost as numerous as the leaves of grass on the soil. Each "hopper" was lively as a cricket and not larger, in the body, than a common house fly.

At present they are harmless, only destroying wild grass and other herbage of the fields, but when they get wings and commence to mi grate, vegetable gardens and potato patches will suffer. "The method, Bays the armer Dictionary, "or destroying the common meadow grasshopper is, to manure the grass immediately after cutting, and while the young insects are abundant, with air-slacked lime, gass-house liquor, salt, a watering of whale oil eoap, and similar boaiea, taking care not to destroy the herbage." We think crude petroleum would prove an efficient remedy. Word Paixtixo. John W. Axts- It really seems, Bays the Yreka Union, that we are on the eve of being visited by some of the ancient plagues. A large black ant has made its appearance in our city. It is about one fourth of an inch in length and is possessed of wings.

They have entered some of our dwellings in such numbers as to cause considerable anxiety on the part of the occupants, who are striving to invent eome means for their extermination. They appear on the walls, floors, sidewalks, and streets, but where they come from is a Mono Coustt, CaL, April 35th, 1866. Editor Examiner Believing that a few items from this place might be interesting to some of your readers I have presumed very briefly to trespass upon your columns. IVliere I Write From. This district is situated in the south eastern portion of Mono, distant from Aurora about one hundred miles, and from Independence, Owen's River Valley, eighty miles.

The district was first formed in 18G1; but in con sequence of the hostile condition of the In dians at times, and the want of working capital the leads have lain dormant and their undoubted wealth has not added either to the material prosperity of the holders, or to the taxable property of the State of California. The owners of claims are thoroughly con vinced that, in the absence of crushing mills, it becomes absolutely incumbent on them to sink down on their claims and exhibit their real qualities before asking capitalists to invest! In accordance with this view the owners of the Pino Blanco lode have a party of seven at work sinking on the same. This is a well defined mineral bearing lode of bix feet or upwards in width, and an assav of nne of iu rock made at the Savage mill yielded $370; another upwards of $350; Sou ot wnicn was goia. mid rock was crop-pings taken from the top, and at fifty feet deep they expect to be able to furnish ore which will far exceed that in richness. The leads of the district do not consist of a few, but, I may say their name is legion, and with a sufficient number of reduction works the district would surely become prosperous, permanent, ana weal in producing.

The Cin derella and its continuation, the Miner, are very nne leads. The former has a 50 feet shaft sunk on it which proves it to be a permanent rapidly increasing lode. The last assay made at fifty feet deep, yielded over $1,200 per ton. The "Examiner." Your valuable Weekly is taken by two of our party, and I can assure you that its arrival from Independence is hailed with pleasure by the "Unterrified," who are domiciled in these mountains. Your bold, decisive ut terances in vindication of President John son's conservative and patriotic course are fully endorsed and thoroughly appreciated.

Andy has proved himself to be another Hickory," and if he only remains fir ml planted on the conservative platform which ne nas cnosen, ne will establish a reputation for himself among the loyal masses of our countrymen, which will be as lasting as the face of the celebrated defender of New Orleans. The Radicals may threaten and talk about impeaching him; but, sir, I predict that the loyal masies of our people will rally around the standard of this exponent of con stitutional liberty and foe of usurpation, Bringing in tneir train sucn a nooa ot entnus-iasm as will forever hush to silence the foes of freedom and the croakers for an Ethiopian Republic ew County. Some time ago the citizens of Owen's Val ley petitioned the Legislature for a new county. Whether such a bill became a law or not I do not know, not being well posted in Legislative matters. The proposed new county was to be framed out of portions of Tulare and Mono.

If the county was formed I hope it may come far enough north to take in this district for in that case we will make a vigorous fight to place Democratic helmsmen at the wheel who will steer the little bark in accordance with the principles of navigation as laid down by President John son in his city of Washington speech of Feb. lla. Ana as to supporting a county organization, if the Kearsarge, Russ, Inyo, Wane Mountain, and other districts and mines ad jacent to Owen's Valley, prove themselves to be wnat we all nope they will, we can discbarge our obligations without embarrassment to ourselves, Sherman's Bill and all other inimical legislation to the contrary notwithstanding. Greexhorn. What is It? We recently published, says the Nevada Gaxette, a short notice of a singular depression ol a strip of ground between Deer Mountain and Greenhorn.

On Saturday the spot was visited by a number of gentlemen, from one of whom we gather still further information. Our informant says: "The sunken ground is situated about one mile, in a souin-easterly direction, from the Star Spangled Banner mine, and but a few rods below McCormick's ditch. The depres sion can oe iracea ior a distance of tnree hundred and fifty feet, and varies in width from three to tnirty-five feet For the distance of one hundred feet the surface has sunk from one to four feet below its natural level. In other places there are merely large cracks in the earth, showing the direction and continuation of the efiects caused by the sunken portions. A number of trees are standing on this depressed ground, and a stump which appears to have been standing on the line cl the fissure, was split through the center one half of it re taining its former position and tne other half Deing depressed, ine roots ot one or two of the trees are slightly exposed to view, caused by the violent separation of the fallen strip from, the ground adjoining.

Beneath the roots of these trees appears a vacuum of eignt or ten leet This strange freak of nature could not have been caused by a slide, as' the surface of the ground in its vicinity is not precipitous but gently sloping to the soutn. Had it been trie work of an earth quake, the shock would have been felt by people living near where the phenomenon occurred. An extensive cavern probably ex iated beneath the place. The heavy rains of ine past iau and winter navinz penetrated the earth to an unusual extent increasing me pressure tne mass ot earu leu into the vacuum." RxroBTKD won run kxamunkb bx sweurr a kauqh.
