Olympics hotel bankrupt LAKE PLACID, N.Y. Less than three weeks after being in the spotlight at the 1980 Winter Olympics, the 85year-old, once-exdusive Lake Placid Resort Hotel has filed for bankruptcy. "This is just to give us some control of our destiny," said James Rybicki, the hotel sales manager, as he sat in the closed-down hotel yesterday. But the hotel has had severe financial problems for many years. And many in the community fear the legal action to federal court is actually the beginning of the end for thee rambling hotel across Mirror Lake from the village's Main Street.

Leafs' head coach hurt in crash ST. CATIIARINES, Ont.

(UPO Floyd Smith, head coach of the National Hockey League Toronto Maple Leafs, was in intensive care with multiple injuries today after his car was involved in a collision that killed a Pennsylvania woman and seriously injured a man. A spokeswoman for St Catharines General Hospital, where Smith was taken after last night's accident, said he was in "fair condition" with a broken left leg and uaspecified head injuries. Pennsylvania State Police identified the dead woman as Anna Joint, of the Erie, area. Her companion, Donald Osinski, 42, of Erie, was listed in "guarded" condition in Hotel Dieu Hospital in St Catharines. Smith, 44, was alone in his car driving from Toronto to his home at Grand Island, N.Y, near Buffalo, when the vehicles collided on the outskirts of St Catharines.

CpL Gord Adams of the Ontario Provincial Police said Smith's 1980 Ford apparently crossed over the eastbound lane of the divided Queen Elizabeth expressway and smashed though guard wires before colliding with the oncoming car. Police said no decision concerning possible charges had been made. A former Buffalo Sabres coach, Smith was named Toronto head coach at the beginning of this NHL season. A Leafs spokeswoman said assistant coach Dick Duff would fill in for Smith. DORTMUND, West Germany (API American figure skating star Linda Fratianne dueled with archrival Anett Poelzsch of East Germany for the last time today.

Their free skating battle on the ice of the Westphalian Hall was to decide the women's world championship. The 19-year-old Los Angeles skater is the defending champion but her dream of taking an Olympic gold medal was shattered by the East German last month at Lake Placid. Now she wants to get even before turning professional Fratianne goes into the climactic four-minute free skating program trailing her rival, as usual. Poetzseh took a strong lead in the compuLso ries and stayed ahead despite a mediocre two-minute program of required moves yesterday with 10 ordinals and 86.28 points. Dagmar Lurz of West Germany, the Olympic bronze medalist, is second with 18 ordinals and 8534 points followed by Fratianne, the Olympic silver medalist with 31-8304.

Coming from behind is nothing new for Fratianne, but this time she is handicapped by a sore right ankle. Poetzseh, also 19, took early leads over Fratianne in the last three world championships and at the Olympics. In 1977 and 1979, Fratianne was able to rally for the title. In 1978 and at Lake Placid, Poetzseh held her off. Both Fratianne and Poeth faced a strong challenge from 17-year-old Swiss sensation Denise Biellmann, who underscored her reputation as the world's best free skater by winning the short program of seven required jumps, spins and pirouettes.

Biellmann, however, was seventh in the standings going into the free skating final, also a casualty of the school figure event where she placed 10th. Last night, a Hungarian couple dethroned the Russian defending champions in a sensational upset in the ice dancing.
