Allen Ginsberg is also in the background during the titles, wandering off across the alley when they finish. The film title, apparently, comes from Dylan's "She Belongs to Me" "She's got every tiling she needs; she's an artist, she don't look back." An ironic statement by one who has so often paid tribute to folk artists and poets of the past, and from one of whom he took his stage name. on stage at the Royal Albert Hall. For me, tliis brought the strongest sympathy for Dylan.

All of "it" was happening too fast for him, too. As the film progresses, he gets more irritable and tired. Yet when the stage call comes and he enters the spotlight it is quite clear that he does, indeed, have a message and that he is, quite surely, a folk' singer. And if he doesn't like people, he certainly likes them to like him. "Don't Look Back" is said to "simply happen" by producer D.

A. Pene-baker. Actually it is his editing which sets the film's whole tone. There is little humor after the titles, Man and Superman "A dazzling Shavian sunburst." -S. F.

San Francisco 94102 1 1 a I lot IHI.Wa.it By PHILIP ELWOOI) The film "Don't Look Back," a rambling hodge-podga of cinematic documentary focusing (usually) on tha enigmatic troubador Bob Dylan, should be seen by anyone either Involved with, or trying to fathom, the generation just arriving at their majority.

Cut down to feature length from about 20 hours generally amateurish filming, the production is a significant and provocative documentation of Dylan's four-week tour of England during 1965. This immediately preceded Dylan's turn to electronic rock from more folk-oriented material. There are often brilliant examples of Dylan during concert performances as well as Dylan pensively observing the misty English countryside, Dylan joshing with nervous school girls, and so forth. But the memorable segments are those which place Dylan in his various roles within the business of being a million dollar concert artist. ON TEOPLE "What's your attitude toward people, Mr.

Dylan?" asks a very square crew-cut 25 year old Midlands reporter. "I don't like them, or you," answers Dylan. "No, I'm not angry," continues Dylan, I Thu Fri Sat May 18 May 19 May 20 1:30 1:30 2 PM 8:30 2 PM 7:30 8:30 8:30 Sun May 21 Tj May 23 Wad May 24 TICKETS GEARY: Tues thru Thurs, Sun Eve: Orch 1st bal $4, S3; 2nd bal $3, $2. INGRATIATING Grossman, the principal supporting character, i just wonderful in the film. He is a cherubic Quaker Oats looking type who nev-ertheless tells off hotel lackeys and handles a booking conference with steel nerves and an ingratiating aplomb. But Grossman, and every one else in this film, treat Dylan with saccharine condescension. The Dylan that writes and performs such brilliant social commentary as "Talking World War III Blues" or "Love Minus ZeroNo Limit" appears, in this film, to be both asocial and anti-social. Ills smirking superiority in press conferences and mouthlng-off during a drunken hotel room scene put Dylan in a rather peculiar posture for one who is among the deity of the love generation.

But on stage, particularly in one of the few well-filmed scenes, at Sheffield, Dylan has a magnetism and genius which blot out everything else, including other parts of this film. EPISODIC Although there is an ap parently chronological ac- of von Trapp's baronial estate. All told, the Circle Star's production of "Sound of Music" moves with vivacity and charm and it will not disappoint its admirers who have made the musical one of the most popular creations of the American theater. And a fine craftsman-like job they do, romping and cavorting with their mother who has never looked more trim or glamorous. Van Dreelen plays the tyrannical paterfamilias who gradually falls under Maria's spell with debonair charm and pompous authority. And Katherine Hil-genberg's rich contralto is extremely impressive i her role of the Mother Abbess.

Under David Tihmar's well-paced direction, the supporting cast performs with polished spontaneity, particularly Linda Kaye Henning as the Captain's eldest daughter and Jonathan Troy as a zany concert manager. ARENA STAGING Hal Shafer's skeletal settings do little to enhance the musical's flavor since the arena staging is an almost impossible challenge for a show that moves from the austerity of the Abbey to the plush terrace Mamma's Hung You a inineuoset And I'mFeelin'So Sad Robert Morse Hugh Griffitl Jonathan Winters Barbara Harris Trawcoiot JiW VANESSA REDGRAVE IN Morgan! 00 I P.M. More mature than the usual scatter-brained pos- tulant, Miss Munsel ex- I ploits this fact in a warm, I vibrant style which happily subtracts a great deal of the cloying stickiness from the sentimental and Hammerstein musical 1 about the Trapp Family Singers. REAL VOCATION With no trace of either tomboyishness or spirituality, Miss Munsel portrays Maria as a sensuous and responsive woman whose real vocation in life is ob- I viously that of a wife and mother.

Her dynamic awareness of Captain von Trapp, suavely portrayed by John Van Dreelen, is a far cry from the frightened-fledgling innocent we are accustomed to seeing in the role. Even when Miss Munsel warbles about her Favorite Things like "crisp apple strudels and schnitzel with noodles," it is apparent that the aforementioned list is really only a sublimation for love and romance which, of course, are just around the corner.
