Announced. The Standing Committees of the Board of Education for the fiscal year, were an nounced last evening. Things nr Solano. The following items are from the Press of July 15 th: On Friday last H. Shultz set out fire to burn some grass in his vineyard enclosure at Green Valley.

It spread so rapidly that it soon got outside of his fence and commenced a fierce race over the mountains on the west of the valley. The neighbors turned out, and it was finally conquered during Friday night, not, however, until it had done considerable damage. Perry Durbin lost wood and hay to the amount of several others were losers to no great extent The machinery of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, at Benicia, was sold at public auction as per announcement. The sale amounted to about $20,000. Nearly all was bought by a San Francisco firm.

The large bell, weighing about 1,000 pounds, was bought for the Congregational congregation of this place to put in their new church about being erected. The track-layer is at work on the ranch of John S. Wood, and the track to Taca Station will be completed on Friday evening. The locomotives are busy bringing np immense loads of ties, iron, chairs and lumber of all descriptions, and the great enterprise is being pushed forward with all the energy possible. The newschool-house at Rockville is nearly completed, and makes quite a line appearance.

There is a debt of about $400 yet remaining on the building, and it is designed to have a social porty to raise funds to liquidate it The Excelsior Mining District is gradually growing in favor with capitalists, and considerable money has recently been invested in mines in that locality. xue Jvans claims, at Backers lliii, Bridgeport township, now owned by John Stidger are paying immense profits to their fortunate owners. California Cocooxs. The Sacramento Union of July 14th sayB: We were shown yesterday a specimen of the cocoons raised at the cocoonery of N. Hoag, in Yolo county, on the Sacramento river, some three miles above this city. The sample consisted of some two pounds, gathered from the brush in which the worms had deposited them, and a bouquet or a collection of cocoons in the brush, showing them as spun. The cocoons appear and are said to be of very excellent quality, of a bright straw color and very hard and compact They appear to be also of unusual size, averaging, as we are informed, some three hundred and twenty-five to the pound.

The eggs were taken to the cocoonery on the first day of one, in a hatching condition, a part having been put to hatching a few days earlier than the rest It was eight davs before the feeding were all hatched. On the first day of July the first day's hatching began their cocoons, and on the eighth day the last did the same and are now all done. We are informed by Hoag that the work of taking care of and feeding them has all been done by Chinamen, one of whom has followed the business for life, on his own account, in China. The Bucoess of the feeding and which, notwithstanding the unusually cold and unfavorable weather of the sevson, is unparalleled is in a great measure attributed to the skill and management of this Chinaman. The cocoonery was supplied with stoves, and fire was built in them every night from the hatching until the cocoons were finished, and the worms fed every four hours, night and day.

The eight hundred thousand worms consumed some twenty tons of leaves, and we are informed that the trees now contain much more foliage than when the feeding commenced, and that the eggs for another feeding are now in process of hatching. Ban Bernardino Matters. The Guar dian, of July 11th, has the following: In the latter part of last week, the stubble in the field of Captain Pishon, at Old San Bernardino, caught fire, and the flames spreading rapidly, soon reached the adjoining field, ULr. Curtis', where a large quantity of grain was stacked awaiting the thresher. Despite the efforts of all bands to clfeck the fiery intruder, eight hundred bushels of grain were destroyed, entailing a loss upon Mr.

Curtis of about The rain that has fallen during the week has, in many instances, caused much damage to the wheat and barley that has been cut and was ready to be threshed, by the thorough wetting it received. The ripening fruit has also been injured, but not to a great extent The dry grass on the plains has been hurt for feed, while not enough rain fell to bring the new grass to maturity. A Laboe Yield. The Susanville Sage Brush, of July 11th, says Mr. C.

C. Goodrich, of Mountain Meadows, in this county, sheared on last week 22 pounds of wool, one year's growth, from a French Merino buck, four years old, owned by him. It is a very large yield, and we doubt if it can be beaten Mr- Goodrich has upwards of 1,500 head of sheep upon his ranch in Mountain Meadows, and he informs us that not one of them that has been wintered over and kept for the last -year upon the farm there will lose any portion of its wool. The sheep kept in the lower country are quite liable to lose their wooL His experience shows that sheep kept here remain healthy and sound, and require but one shearing during the year. This fact should attract the attention of all wool-growers throughout the country.

Wheat. The Stockton Independent, of July 15th, has the following Wi eat is being brought forward from the farms in considerable quantities on teams yet, thus far, the most has arrived on river steamers. The great wheat centre in San Joaquin Valley, this year, is the Paradise district and the greatest part of the product of that section will probably be sent forward by water. The Old Tenth Lojrfon. An outpouring of the 1st Precinct of the Tenth Ward occurred last night at McCue'S large hall, and a glorious meeting it was.

This Club 1 taking the lead of all others this year again, as well as formerly, but we hope soon to see others vieing with it. Judge Tilford and Mr. Hambleton, who had been advertised to speak, were both unable to be present, but their places were filled by W. Sawyer, Judge Hardy, and Dorsey Gough, Esq. Mr.

Sawyer's speech, though brief in time, (half an hour,) was comprehensive In matter. He reviewed the leading issues of the canvass in a forcible, logical and eloquent manner. He was very frequently applauded, and his speech gave immense gratification to those present. Judge Hardy entered more at length upon the discussion of the questions involved in the Presidential election, and elucidated the several matters in a clear and argumentative style. He showed up the folly and infamy of the Radical policy of negro suffrage in the South Congress loreing it upon tne wmte people or the southern States whilst admitting that the neoole of the Northern States have a right to control the question for themselves.

He also reviewed the finan cial policy of the Radicals, showing that they are raising money by taxes upon the people for the ostensible purpose of paying the interest on our National debt, and then using a large portion oi support ine wonniess neero or the South. Judge Hardy made somo severe home thrusts at the party in power and at Gen. Grant, who, he said, possessed neither statesmanship nor purity of character. Dorsey Goueh. made a short and happy speech, which was received with vociferous applause.

We regret our limited space to-day docs not permit us to give at length the speeches of the gentlemen named. Thb California Labor Exchange. Be was convinced that a female department was Leces- sary. The subject of organizing a female department of the Labor Exchnge was deferred to the next regular monthly meeting, to be Held on Saturday, August 1st.

Arrested, About five or six months ago, a swindle was discovered in the Sub-Treasury De partment at the Mint in this city. It was found that the Government had lost some twelve thou sand dollars by an ingenious system of fraud. An outside broker would buy "low cast" bars of low grade COO or 700 fine, and deposit them in the Mint for coinage. The computing clerk in the Sub-Treasurer office would then make his returns on the bars at a higher grade, say 800 and upwards, and ry collusion with other parties, as is supposed, certificates of assay representing a considerable sum more than the actual amount deposited would be issued to the broker, and by him sold. The cause of the deficit was covered up for a long time.

The computing clerk. Sill, and the broker, Dougherty, Were indicted by the Grand Jury the former, however, managed to get East. He returned a few days ago, and yes terday was arrested at the Vernon House, by Leputy Marshal Worth, Captain Lees and Detective Fuller. Tom Stbkei Raxlboads.
