Smith There are some liberties each generation must make newly secure, some rights must be ever defended, some holy traditions must be renewed, and some wells must be redug. Abraham, the father of Isaac, moved across the Land of Promise digging wells and establishing his own type of civilization. Then, when his back was turned, the enemies of Israel filled up the wells.

returned to the land he found it necessary to redig the wells. Otherwise his claim to the land would have been forfelted, and life would have become impossible. Enemy Hath Done This It is one of the anomalies of progress that all advancement has to be made over the protest, and against the opposition of other people, and it sometimes happens that some of them are rather splendid folk. Their ignorance, or their preoccupation, has blinded them to even their own best interests. It is possible that we shall do very great damage to democracy at the very moment that we are ettempting to protect It; and it also possible that we shall betray the spirit of Protestantism at the very moment that we are proclaiming Its principles.

All the things, done in the name of religion are not religious, The enemies of free governments are not all to be found behind curtains of various sorts: some of them are on our side of the line but not of our side of the cause. We have made much of our traditional heritage of free speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of thought, and freedom of the press. And then, because someone in exercising those freedoms has disagreed with us, we have denied them the rights we demand for ourselves. Isaac, the Old Testament hero, had arrived a high state of moral and ethical maturity when he was able to live at peace in a world of strife. It called for a rare degree of self-discipline. He was the kind of man who could dig a well and move on to dig another, prizing peace above pride.

But he left something it the way of permanent civilization behind him, which was more than his enemies did. An Altar, a Heme, a Well There is something rarely significant, in the fact that Isaac "built an altar," a tent." and "dug a well." In those three acts he fulfilled the demands of great citizenship. He established worship, he provided for his family, and he made his economy secure. There is something so very 1 futile about erecting a house in which there is no family religion, and in trying to make our economy secure without making our souls secure, History has a way of reminding also, 118 that no economic life is long secure in those lands or among those people who have no altar and who worship no God.
