Hotel Setup In Calgary Is Okayed CALGARY (CP)-Does this city need a new hotel? Ask the question of a visitor to the famed mid-summer Calgary Stampede or any other tourist at the peak of the season and he 11 reply, weary from wandering the streets in search of a "vacancy sign: Yes indeed. But on the whole-year average, Calgary's hotel accommodation is as good as most cities and better, than many say the hotel-owners. Herb Surplis, financial editor of the Calgary Herald, looked into the problem and came up with the financial facts of the matter. Before the Second World War, Surplis wrote, a hotel with not too-elaborate fittings could be built for about $1,000 a room. Today, the same hotel would cost $10,000 a room. And if the owner wants to go all out, $20,000 a room. Hotel overheads have increased 100 per cent. It costs as much now to hire a man to empty the ashtrays as it did to import a French chef before the war. Yet hotel rates to the guest have increased little in proportion. Though the demand for hotel ac commodation has slackened somewhat in the last year. It is still high. The first-class hotels feel the strain most. Others, with a large percentage of permanent guests, have a steady trade. - The better the hotel the more the fluctuations has been the rule. The first-class place attracts profitable conventions, mostly iii the spring and fall, Stampeder visitors and other travellers during the brief tourist season. , Crossword Puzzle Answer A V QN PIE IE OHIO J-X.i.i-i.JiT 2.
