WW i Friday, May 12, 1972 ALABAMA JOURNAL, Montgomery, Ala. 19 'Poncho' Not Disappointed Russell, Bag eft Receive AGC Athletic Honors set the old mark of 19 in 1965. By JOHN POWNALL Journal Sports Writer Russell's 53 points in one game "Next year just possibly could broke the old standard of 48 set by Alfred Bell in 1970. Kussell also bested Bell for Gary Spivey received the Most Improved Sophomore basketball trophy and also grabbed the free throw trophy with an 81.4 percentage. Last season's basketball team finished the season with a 10-15 mark to make it the most dismal of Tate's career.

But the ACC coach is excited about next the best point average per game, nussei tinisnea ms iirsi court season with the Eagles averaging 24.4 points per con be our year," Williard Tate said at the Alabama Christian College athletic banquet Thursday night in the school's cafeteria. "We have a wealth of talent and world of potential," the ACC head basketball coach continued ecstatically. "I just wish the season was starting tomorrow." The banquet 'was held in test. Bell's 1968-69 record was 24.1. The affable Russell also was season.

"He needs to put an some more weight to become a good strong defensive man. With our running style of play he couldn't carry the weight he needed." Jabbar of course is the 7-2 center for the Milwaukee Bucks, who has bten the top scorer and the Most Valuable Player in the National Basketball Association for the past two years with a better than 30-point per game average. Why was a mam who was drafted second a year ago by the New York Knicks taken only third this time around? "Gregg just didn't have the season' this year that he had last," explained Boozer. "I put on some extra weight just in case I decided to go pro," commented I thought that if I stayed around for my final yer in college I could take the weight tf and get in shape. But it didn't turn out that way.

"I didn't really get into shape until well into the second half of the season." In his three seasons at Bama State he tallied a total of 2,191 points for an average of 29.2 and grabbed 1,426 rebounds, a mean of 19.0. He hit on an average of .645 per cent of his field shots and .742 of his free throws. Does Poncho prefer the NBA or the ABA? Last year he was a third round draft choice of the Carolina Cougars of the ABA and as stated the Knicks' second pick. This year Northington has not offically been drafted by the ABA. He is believed, however, to have been a secret first round choice by the Pittsburg Condors.

"Being a small black school, Alabama State wasn't able to get the top-inotch competition. We had only about five or six tough games all year. "Right now I want to face the best competition available. The ABA has only four or five stable teams. Last year Carolina was talking so crazy that I didn't want to have anything to do with them." Why did Northington decide to stay in college for his final year instead of turning pro? After all he is a former ghetto dweller.

"The Knicks weren't offering enough money," continued Northington. "Being I was black they were going to try and get me for as little as possible. Being from a small black school they thought I wasn't ready. Why they weren't even willing to pay for my final year in college. "All they were offering was a $15,000 bonus, $5,000 to show and $45,000 if I made the team.

They said they don't give no cut contracts, but I found out later they do." Was Northington disappointed in being drafted third this season? "I wasn't really disappointed," conti-, nued the bearded Northington. "I knew I would be drafted some where along the line. The thing that did disappoint me though was the fact that I heard during the season that someone had been spreading incriminating rumors that I wasn't coachable and had a bad personality." What does the seven-footer think about the Lakers? "I like the Lakers, After all they are World Champs. I could learn a lot from Wilt Chamberlain by just watching. I like the way Jerry West and Gail Goodrich shoot.

Coach Bill Sharman has a good theory going with his running offense." What does Northington think about his future in the pros? "Right now my game is offense. But I hope, to become known as a defender the officials in this league (SIAC) wouldn't let you play defense. Anyone can play offense. If I make the team, I'll play it might take two or three years to find out some things. But I'm going to play." What is Northington asking of the Lakers? "I want about an average bonus, Most seven-footers are getting about $70,000 a year in salary.

I would like to have that, but my first year I might have to take less. If can't make the team, I'll go to Europe4. I know can play there." Being a seven-foot basketball player has its disadvantages also. Northington has been contacted by over 50 persons wishing to be his lawyer or agent to negotiate for his contract. "They've all been about the same," added Poncho.

"They want anywhere from five to 15 per cent of what I would get. I just don't trust them. But I'll eventually get someone to help negotiate with me. Before I do anything they'll have to explain it to me fully." Some might call him controversial or radical, but Greggory Poncho" Northington is just out to play some basketball and gain respect as a man rather than a seven footer who will be gawked at as a circus freak. "I've learned to live with it," says Gregg, "But He's definitely no freak, but an agi'e athlete who could be one of the greatest ever turned out by an Alabama institu- tion.

He's gained many honors down the line, All-America, numerous All-Tourney selections, MVP in the state by a newspaper, but for Poncho the biggest honor would be for someone to recognize him as Greggory "Poncho" Northington the man rather than Greggory "Poncho" Northington the seven foot basketball player. cording to an announcement by Receiving baseball awards Charles Russell and Butch Athletic Director Jeff Beard, were Baggett, catcher; Burton, Baggett walked away with all Dumas won the state titles in the trophies. 1969 and 1970, and finished one Russell, a 6-6 freshman center from Hartselle. set three pitcher and third base; Curtis Gilliland, pitcher and right field; Gillis, pitcher; Danny Harrison, left field; Lambert, pitcher; Scott Langham, shot back of the winning score records this past season this year.
