At the conclusion of its three-day convention here Saturday, the CAA, in a telegram to Prime Minister Diefenbaker and Works Minister Green, recommended the federal government assume more responsulity la a national highways policy. It vrged Ottawa to contribute, 50 per cent to the cost of all arterial highways; assume one-third the cost of access roads, with provincial and municipal governments also assuming one-third each; and to encourage multiple lane highways in population centres. Alex R. Morrison of London, was re-elected president.

For Mining ELLIOT LAKE (CP) A bid to reduce the death toll in ura nium mine accidents is to be asked to back a proposed new safety code. Fifieen men bate been killed in accidents in this area $ince the beginning of the year and if the code is endorsed, the onions. United Steel Workers of America and Local 1554 of the Canadian Labor Congress, will press for its incorporation in the Ontario Mining Act, The unions, which are affiliated and represent workers at nine of the 10 mines in the area, pro pose that the code be discussed publicly with mine management after it has been presented at a safety conference by the Ontario Federation of Labor in Sault Ste. Marie June 10. The unions urge that haulage-ways in bad ground should be timbered with steel drift sets and slopes timbered and backfilled.

Where underground shuttle cars are used the unions ask for ad equate brakes and a traffic light system. To provide effective ven tilation and dust control they pro pose that blasting be performed at scheduled times and that ven tilation raises and drifts be driven to circulate air. The proposals also cover hoist ing operations, cages, safety belt as well as training schools for inexperienced employees.
