'ASK MORE QUESTIONS 1 Bank Chief Hopes U.S. Trust Case to Teach Texans Lesson AUSTIN, Dec. 29 Iffl Bankil'? Commissioner J. M. Falkner Texans may learn an investment safety lesson from the U.S.

Frtist and Guaranty Co. receiver- ihip case. He told an interviewer the affair should teach them to look jeepev than advertised high interest raies when seeking to invest their savings. U. S.

Trust and Guaranty was not under supervision of the banking department. A bill to include such firms among those regulated by the Bonking Commission passsd the bouse during the last se.ssic.nj of the Legislature, but failed in senate commillee. 'Think' U. S. Trust and Guaranty was under Insurance Commission regu.

lallon. ''I'believe tho U. S. Trust case is going to make the public think and ask more questions in the future," Falkner said "It is unfortunate that many people don't ask questions before investing their money. They look at the interest rate and don't consider the safety factor." Falkner said the banking department had received many inquiries about U.

S. Trust but that it had not been able to make any official replies since such firms were not under its control. Inquiries of that nature, he said, are referred to the proper state agency. For Supervision There are plenty of competent sources to advise small investors Falkner said, Including bankers. Slate banks and savings and loan institutions are both under supervision of the banking department.

National banks are under federal supervision, and twice-yearfy examinations are made by both state and federal officials. "We get behind in our examinations because of.the work load sometimes, but not generally," Falkner said. Notaries Bonded By Waco Firm to File Hew Bonds Taylor County notary publics bonded by the U.S. Trust and Guaranty Co. of Waco have been without bonds since Dec.

22. County Clerk Mrs. Cheater Hutch- was notified Thursday morning by the receiver for the bankrupt insurance company that the bonds were cancelled as of Dec. 22. She was instructed to have notaries bonded by the firm file new bonds and oaths of office within 10 days.

Mrs, Hutclieson cautioned notaries bonded by the firm to not notarize any documents until posting a new bond and oath. They not lose their commissions if new bonds are posted within 10 days, A check of about one-half of the 1,600 bonds of notaries of Taylor County turned up only one from the Waco firm, Mrs. Hutcheson said Thursday afternoon. "One thing Is certain: when 'in; a bank Is Insolvent, we go off and leave it. We put it into liquidation or see that it is rehabilitated immediately." U.

S. Trust had advertised it paid 5 per cent on funds deposited with it. On savings accounts, most banks have been paying 2 per cenl and savings and loan agencies may pay from 2 to 4 per cent after a' reserves and expenses are provided for, Falkner said. Hecent raises from 1 to 2 per cent by banks on savings accounts are probably the result of coin petition and likely have no con nection with the U. S.

Trust case Falkner said. ihree Men Accused Of Evading Taxes AUSTIN, Dec. 29 W-Three Galveston men, Frank Maceo, Vic C.
