But, yesterday, my wife called me at the office and said she was going to buy some more fish, "What would you think about having a piranha?" she asked.

ing tip a few of shrimp eggs on the way home. Shrimp eggs? Yes. She had decided that sea horses would be nice because they are unusual. I admit, they are cute little things but 1 have you any idea how expensive shrimp eggs are, or how many it takes to fill up the belly of two small sea horses, Plenty. Or how difficult it is to find shrimp eggs? Forget it.

Finally, we were forced to By WILLIAM L. CHAZE Associated Press Writer ATLANTA, Ga. (AP) In a moment of weakness, I allowed my wife to purchase an aquarium for my son. The idea was that it would be an educational birthday present and the fish would stretch the kid's mind. Not a bad idea.

It sounded like something Sesame Street might go for, so I gave her the money. It was a mistake that is apt to be with me a while. Like the next 50 years. A couple of days after approving the purchase, I came home to find my wife poring over six large books, which she had bought. The books, highly technical affairs with small print and complicated looking graphs and diagrams, came to quite a few dollars.

"Listen," said my wife, her tone precluding any lectures on economy, "you just can't go out and buy an aquarium. This is a very big deal. You have to know what kind of marine life can live in the aquarium, what kind of fish eat other fish and what sort of ferns to put in there. This, my man, takes research." Fingering the coins in my pocket, I smiled sheepishly and nodded. Frankly, I was embarrassed that I hadn't realized all that.

I thought that all that was necessary was to save up the few bucks and then to go out and bring home a fishtank. You put a couple of fish in some water and that was it. A week later, I was sitting In the living room when my wife walked in the front door with a small sack filled with pamphlets telling me how to s-t up the aquanum which, at that moment, was in the trunk of the car. "You're going to love this," she said. "The ferns and little things I got to go inside the tank just about, match the bedspread in Gavin's room.

He is going to love this. I just know it." I almost fainted, but recov- After lOYears, I THE i SATELLITE i ered quickly when I opened the tru k. The aquarium was enormous, maybe four feet long and more than a foot high. It came with its own set of chemical solutions, a complicated heating rod to keep the water at tropical temperature, a gadget that filled the water with air bubbles. It took me 10 days to set it up.

I then suggested that we pour in some tap water and buy a few goldfish and forget it. My wife was horrified. "Listen, pal, you've got to get serious about this. You can't just put any old water in there We've got to get some sea water." Also, she said, looking reprovingly at my pipe, it must be ecologically balanced. A 400-mile roundtrip to the sea followed.

In bad weather, I noticed, the sea is the color of dollar bills. Finally, we were ready for the fish. My wife, a few days later, called me at the office to tell me that the fish were in the tank and would I mind pick THE PROVOCATIVE PEDAGOGUES TL- I Alltll jj. Our mayor is working on his retirement plan.

If he is elected another four years, he can retire on the city plan for the rest of his natural life. He would get close to 10,000 a a year. That's a hefty retirement deal. Suppose he lived 20 more years. He could end up with $200,000 from the retirement fund.

That's almost the total of what he would have been paid as a city politician. That's a big bonus to pay a politician. I'm for retirement but not political retirement. I don't think the city retirement plan was intended for elected politicians but for hired city employees. It's unfair to saddle our city retirement plan with politicians.

It's mighty expensive to the city. As your mayor, I will never accept one dime from this fund. I will remove myself from the retirement plan.
