The replacement is the sequel, "Aparajito," decorated with al most as many blue ribbons as "Pather Panchali " Venice grand prize, India's best of the year, hest direction from the San Francisco Film Festival. And this isn't the end. There's another coming, "The World of Apu," completing Satyajit Ray's trilogy from Bibhutibhushan Bandopadyaya's novel of a poor Indian family of the 1920s. "APARAJITO" doesn't get as close to the heart as did "Pather Panchali." Nor is there the light laughter we got from the recognizable childhood pranks of the two children, the mischievous Durga and her adoring younger brother, Apu. It's U seriousness and it's touching and skillfully directed except when Ray lets his camera go roaming away from his characters to show views round cities- and countryside. Taking up where "Pather Panchali" left off, the father, the mother anr littk Apu leave for Benares after Durga's death. Life . , Oh f) Karuna Banerji is easier in the city for them until the father dies. His widow goes to work as a domestic. Apu growing into the teens, goes to school and is rewarded or his diligence by a scholarship to a university in Calcutta. HERE WE HAVE the story of a lonely mother who would like for her ion to be near her. to get married and be. a priest as his father was. And the youth, thirsting for knowledge, whJ must have an education. They are gentle, quiet people. Sympathetic, the mother gives her son her savings and sends him away with her blessing. Learning is thrilling to Apu and if he neglects his mother it's because of supplementary work and eollege examinations that will send him to a school of higher learning. And we guess that school is Oxford and think that is where we will next see him in "The World of Apu." AS IT WAS IN "Pather Panchali," the acting i3 sensitive, restrained and convincing.
