largest number in the four of Ottawa The Rotary Ciub has pioneered in crippled child by the government of Siam. This is not because the risk is large of Communism making headway among the Siamese, who are Buddhists, monarchists and mostly prosperous peasant proprietors with no grudge against "western imperialism" says The Times editorially. Promises that the land will be redistributed and the country freed from foreign rule mean nothing in Siam where there is little pressure on the soil and no memory of political subordination to the west. The Communist threat to Siam springs first from the fact that it is already implanted in neighboring countries and secondly, from its influence on the Chinese section of her own population. Now that the government of China is Communist, almost all the Chinese in Siam claim to be Communists too.

The local Communist party is mainly Chinese and the feeling among them is markedly in favor of Mao Tse Tung. The head of the Siamese history of the society's annual campaign for funds, are being distributed throughout Ontario and Quebec. 60,000 In Ottawa Sixty thousand seals have been mailed to homes in the ren's work ever since it was founded. The most widely known example of their work in this district which depends on Easter Seal dollars is the camp at Ottawa area. They are accom- wh jyen three.

LONDON The second congress of the Hungarian Workers Party opens today under radically different circumstances from those of its original convention in June 1948, says The Times Budapest correspondent. Then the "party celebrated the union of the two "working class" parties the Communists and the Social Democrats. Since then, many of the prominent Social Democrats most eager for a merger with the Communists and willing to collaborate with the new workers' party have been eliminated as office holders in the party, denounced as right wing conspirators and called hirelings of the British Labor party's "international spy A thorough purge of Social Democrats continues in all walks of life.

They havebeen removed from party organizations, trade union offices, factories and government posts, and any lags in production are blamed on right wing Social Democrats. At the time of the first party congress, relations with Yugoslavia were those of brotherly love befitting members of the Cominform family: now practically no day passes without acrimonious attacks on Tito's regime. From overt symptoms, however, reports of the imminence of a Hungarian attack on Yugoslavia have been grossly exaggerated. A strong line against Communism in Asia is being taken to contribute. Also, the entire Ottawa district was surveyed and 132 new suf ferers from the crippling effects of polio and other disabling conditions were discovered.

One hundred and twenty-seven child "Since Ottawa has been selected for the official opening of this year's Easter Seal Campaign, we should set an example by being the first city to oversubscribe our objective," declared P. Halpenny, chairman of the Rotary Easter Seal Committee in urging support for the appeal. His policy is to support the United Nations and to work with the Western Powers. By following this policy he is staking a claim for their support if Siam is directly threatened by Communist aggression. New Church In Overbrook Dedication services for the new Riverview Community Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, will be held this Sunday, commencing at 2.30 p.m., in the new church building, Russell Road at Prince Albert Street, Overbrook. The new church, which replaces the Overbrook Gospel Tabernacle destroyed by fire March 19, 1949, will be dedicated by Rev. These activities were all paid for by funds received from Easter Seals.

Surgical appliances, braces and artificial limbs were also purchased. Other smaller payments included orthopaedic shoes and boots, the purchase of several wheel chairs, transportation expenses for three "Blue Babies" to the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children and several miscellaneous payments in connection with local crippled children activities. A plan was initiated to assist handicapped children to further their education through bursaries and loans. Other activities of the local committee include a picnic which is held at the home of a Rotar-ian in the country and an annual Christmas Party for members of the Sunshine Class. No other agency is duplicating the work of the Ontario Society for Crippled Children in its work among handicapped children.

This is the society's only appeal for public assistance and Its activities are largely dependent on money received through Easter seals. Immediate War With Russia Said Only Alternative By The Associated Press SCHENECTADY, N.Y. United States Ambassador Philip C. Jessup asserted Friday that immediate war with Russia was the only alternative to the Truman administration's current foreign policy. "In spite of Communist provocations and domestic vilifications, it will remain the object and the obligation of American foreign policy to seek peaceful adjustments of all issues without surrender or appeasement," Jessup said.

"Timmy" Chosen Every year, some crippled child is chosen as "Timmy" to symbolize all handicapped children who benefit from the year-round activities of the society. This year, six-year-old Dennis Gibbons of Welland has been chosen as "Timmy" and will be here on Monday to take part in the opening of the campaign which continues until March 25. The work of the Ontario Society for Crippled Children is based on a three-point program. Direct services are provided which include case finding, diagnostic clinics, medical care, physical therapy, special schools and classes, home teaching, vocational training, summer camps, recreational services and special equipment such as leg braces.
