They were watching a radar screen. The members, enjoying a brief respite from the House of Com-mons, were cruising down the Ottawa River In the National Research Council's latest radar experimental ship the Radel II. Six of them were members of? the parliamentary NRC commit tee under the chairmanship of OTTAWA TRANSPORTATION COMISSIOE. NEW BUS SERVICES Commencing Saturday, July 1st, 1950, the area within the City Limits presently served with public transportation by the Uplands Bus Line Limited will be served by the Ottawa Transportation Commission.

On that date the following adjustments to existing bus services, the introduction of new bus routes, and adjusted rates of fare will be made effective. to member for Ottawa West. to The Radel equipped with the NRC's newest radar gadgets gratiu Bet off down the river in brll- liant sunshine. Twenty minutes later the Georr members were running for shelter as heavy rain slashed across the decks.

Lai This was described as a minor Hist, example of long-range detection. for investigating special radar problems reported to the NRC by navigators and ship owners. One problem is that features along the shore line, channel markers and other points on navigation routes often look too much alike for positive investigation from aboard ship. But if coded reflectors are installed at these points, the ship will receive a characteristic signal from each, enabling a safe course to be charted. This year further experiments will be made with a microwave "lighthouse" which makes it possible for a ship to take an accurate bearing on a shore radio beacon regardless of weather conditions.

On Great Lakes All this summer the Radel II will be engaged on experiments In the Great Lakes and other Inland waterways aimed at reducing the minimum detection range even further. The experiments are designed to enable radar-equipped vessels to enter the narrow gaps and to dock safely at crowded piers in thick A successor to the Radel which carried out similar NRC experiments last year, the Radel II Is a converted naval Falrmile. Measuring 110 feet in length, the vessel carries seven research workers and crewmen. Her predecessor carried only four. "She Is also more seaworthy," said the Radel's skipper, H.

Ross Smyth, who is head of the NRC's radio aids for marine navigation section. Mr. Smyth said 270 Canadian hips now are equipped with radar apparatus developed by the NRC as new apparatus is designed and perfected, it is turned over to. commercial manufacturing concerns for development. During our experimental cruises in the Great Lakes this summer we shall be demonstrating our latest apparatus to merchant marine shipping operators," he said.

The Soo Locks, the gateway between Lake Huron and Lake Superior, yesterday were ordered closed to the public for an indefinite period as a security measure. Clifford Aune, superintendent of the locks, said orders to that effect were received from John D. Bristor, district engineer for the Army's Detroit District, Corps of Engineers.

Aune said no one without special identification would be allowed inside the gates until further notice. The restrictions still are not as rigid as during the war, however. At that time troops guarded the locks and crew members of all ships passing through them were screened. There was no mention of either of those steps In yesterday's announcement. But still the new order went considerably beyond one Issued only Tuesday.

At that time the locks were ordered closed from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. for the next 10 days as a "temporary expedient test of security measures."
